The aim of the English Bible Department is to train the student in the reverent and effective use of the Bible for personal life or personal walk, soul winning, and public ministry. To this end three methods of Bible study are employed. The synthetic method of Bible study is designed to enable the student to obtain a broad view of the contents of Scripture, seeing each book · as a whole and its relation to the other books . The analytical method considers books in detail, inquiring into the authorship, occasion for writing, purpose, and theme of each. The contents of the books are analyzed and spiritual truths are emphasized. The expository method instructs the student in setting forth in detail the fullness of the divine Truth. SYNTHESIS. The synthetic method of Bible study is designed to enable the student to obtain a broad view of the contents of Scripture, seeing each book as a whole and its relation to the other books. The following are included under this heading:

SYNTHESIS I-THE PENTATEUCH. The first five boks of the Bible are studi ed in some detail, with special attention given to the Book of Genesis, the wilderness Tabernacle, and the offerings and worship in Leviticus. Practical lessons are drawn from the Book of Numbers, and the great prophetic section of the latter part of Deuteronomy is given special attention. Credit, four hours. SYNTHESIS II-THE HISTORICAL, PROPHETIC, AND POETICAL BOOKS OF THE OLD TESTAMENT. Beginning with the Book of Joshua, the hi stori cal books are studied bri efly with practical and spiritual truths emphasized. The poetical books are considered as a new literary form. The prophetic books are studied with an emphasis upon the messages of the minor prophets. Credit, four hours. SYNTHESIS III-THE GOSPELS. Considered from the standpoint of the unique message of each. The distinctive features of each Gospel are emphasized. Credit, three hours. SYNTHESIS IV-THE EPISTLES. Paul's epistles considered in chronolo­ gical sequence rather than in orde r. All the epi stles except Romans and Hebrews are studied. Credit, three hours. DISPENSATIONS. The correct divisions of the Word, especially the divi­ sions into periods, or dispensations, or ages. This shows how a sane dispensa­ tional study of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation is essential to its proper understanding. Credit, two hours. PERSONAL EVANGELISM. The various methods of personal work, Scrip­ tural answers to excuses most frequently encountered, and instructions for strengthening new converts in the faith. Emphasis is placed on Scripture memorization as necessary for personal work. Credit, two hours. 42
