Jack Schwarz, Chairman Objectives: The objectives of the Music Department are (1) to provide an atmosphere for growth in musicianship and creative expression; (2) to motivate students toward the development of specific musical skills through disciplined study; (3) to encourage social and spiritual growth through ensembles and open dialogue in and out of the class room; (4) to afford an opportunity for musical study to those who are not majors but show a deep interest in music . Entrance Requirements: In addition to the regular college entrance requirements, students entering the music department as music majors or minors must take a music theory ex­ amination . This examination is designed to evaluate the student's ability to analyze and notate all major and minor scales ; to recognize and construct all intervallic combinations and all diatonic triads and inversions , and to interpret and construct simple and compound meters . (For comprehensive preparation , study: Harder , Paul , Basic Materials in Music Theory, 2nd Edition , Allyn and Bacon , Boston , 1970.) This examination will be given in May and September. It is also expected that the entering student be capable of pursuing college level work in his applied area. Specific information as to level of literature and technical studies is available from each applied division within the music department. Activities: The Music Department provides opportunities for experience in several types of vocal and instrumental ensembles , including the Biota Chorale, Chamber Music En­ semble , Chamber Singers, La Mirada Symphony , Oratorio Chorus, String Ensemble , Summer Choir and Symphonic Band . All are open to non-music majors as well as music majors by audition at the beginning of each semester. (The exception is oratorio chorus which is open to all students without audition and is offered only in the spring semester.) Individual performance opportunities are offered through weekly student recitals , weekly music-at-noon concerts , and Junior and Senior recitals . The Music Department concert series features outstanding guest artists as well as its own widely-known faculty . Opportunities off Campus: The stature of Los Angeles as a music center provides excep­ tional opportunities for hearing the world's leading artists, as well as outstanding college and church music organizations. Service Opportunities: The Los Angeles metropolitan area furnishes many opportunities for remunerative service in music . There are frequent openings for competent organists, church choir directors , soloists , and accompanists. Scholarships: Music scholarships and performance awards in various amounts are available to qualified students. Majors: A professional degree (Bachelor of Music) is offered with emphasis in one of the following areas: applied music , composition , and music education (elementary and secondary. A non-professional degree (Bachelor of Arts) with a major in music is offered as well as a non-professional music minor. Candidates for the Bachelor of Music degree are exempt from the general education re­ quirement in foreign language , literature, and need take only five units in mathematics and/or science . All Bachelor of Music candidates must complete a basic course of 51 units of music which consists of the following: Music 100 , 103 , 104,201 , 202 , 203,204 , 221 , 301,302,305 ,
