BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE

Raphael Payne, Chairman Objectives: The aims of the Biological Science curriculum are ( 1) acquainting all students with the reasoning processes of the scientific method as applied in biology, with the ex isting principles of biology as they apply to our age of technology, and with the dynamic state of advance in knowledge in biology; (2) supporting the curriculum of majors in other departments (Nursing, Psychology, Physical Education, Education); (3) supplying a strong foundational core curriculum for the major in general Biological Science, and providing depth within a balanced selection of the major areas within biology. BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE MAJOR REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE The core curriculum in biology requires 32 units, including 100, 202 (252), 312, 401 (452), 470 and a minimum of four units from each of three groupings to total 14 elective units. Thirty-two units of supporting sciences are required, twenty in Chemistry (must in clude 301) and twelve in Mathematics and Physical Science (must include Mathematics 105 and Physics). Biology course groupings are (A) 301,311,331; (B) 221,222,252 (452), 352,402; (C) 302,411,421,422. BIOLOGICAL £DUCA TTON (SECONDARY) REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE Biology requirements are the same as stated above; 20 units of supporting physical science including Chemistry 301 and Mathematics 105; 9 units of professional education courses. BIOLOGICAL EDUCATTON (ELEMENTARY) REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE Biology requirements same as stated above; 18 units of supporting physical science in cluding Chemistry 301; 14 units of professional education courses. Department Minor: 18 units, 12 of which must be upper division. The core curriculum is recommended unless specific needs dictate otherwise . Specific minor requirements are to be approved by a departmental advisor. All of the above majors require proficiency testing in the areas of Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics. Staff analysis of these exams (administered during Freshman Orientation week or upon notice) will provide information to be used by the student and academic advisor in projecting specific course requirements in elective areas, correcting deficiency areas and waiver or challenge of lower division courses. The tests are "College Level Examinations" as offered by the College Entrance Board, Berkeley, California. The general education requirement for a foreign language for those following a biology major may be met by two years of high school language or the first four uni ts of a college language. These language units do not apply toward the required 138 units for graduation.
