clinical nursing course. Students wishing to transfer from other nursing programs or who are applying for the first time to a nursing program are evaluated individually. Both acceptance to and continuation in the nursing major will be determined by the student's preparation, performance, and personal qualities as assessed by the faculty of the Depart ment of Nursing. Philosophy: In accord with the Christian belief of the College , the philosophy of the School of Nursing has at its center the Christian philosophy of the love of God for man in his depravity , man's human dignity, and the recognition of man's spiritual potential. Professional nursing is described as promoting optimum health for individuals, the family, and community through preventive, curative or restorative, supportive and rehabilitative nursing care. It is a decision-making process in which health needs or problems are identi fied and the dynamics of problem-solving is planned which enable the nurse to demon strate independent judgment and skill in the care of the individual, the family , and community. It is further characterized by personalized , Christlike service to individuals and families. Nursing is coordinated with the services of other health disciplines and community resources. The Present and Emerging Roles of the Professional Nurse Believing that the present and emerging roles of the professional nurse in today's society focus on the health needs of the individual, the family, and the community, the curri culum has been developed around a health-illness nursing model with this definite reflection . The program also focuses on today ' s world in an ever-widening circle . It in cludes the multiple role of the nurse in meeting these needs . The professional nurse sets a goal of nursing intervention to assist the patient or family to attain the highest level of wellness in the physical, cognitive, emotional , social, and spiritual areas. The professional nurse is seen not only as one who gives care , but also as a leader who organizes direct patient care, coordinates health services , teaches , plans community health, does research to continue exploring ways of improving nursing knowledge and abilities, and who can explain and use principles from physical and behaviorial sciences and nursing theory to support nursing actions . To prepare for these roles, the student has the opportunity to learn in the capacity of an independent practitioner (under guidance of his professors), a team worker , a team leader , a teacher, a counselor , and as an observer , in diverse settings , such as hospitals, clinics, community health centers , community mental health centers, convalescent centers , pub lic schools , private homes and families and neighborhood health centers. Throughout the program the curriculum allows the student to have experience in areas and agencies of deprived, middle class, and affluent sections of two counties in Southern California. The faculty believes that baccalaureate nursing education rests upon a broad liberal arts education and scientific principles , and that the professional primary emphasis in nursing builds upon, incorporates , and extends previous learnings from these bases . The faculty also believes that in the process of nursing education, the student needs to develop behaviors in the area of problem-solving, critical thinking, creative thinking , verbal and written communication, interpersonal relationships and conation . The student also needs to develop ideals which grow out of his Christian faith. Thus the Conceptual Framework within which the nursing and non-nursing courses have been organized continues with the unifying concept of "nursing as process" in helping man to achieve his highest level of wellness or health. This health includes the physical , cognitive, emotional , socio-cultural , and spiritual aspects. The nurse must make diagnoses , determine goals, formulate plans of intervention, implement those plans , and be able to evaluate the consequences .
