IN CHRIST IS LIFE

Spring Heart-cleaning D id you ever notice how little things have a way of accumu lating until they become a clutter? It almost seems amazing how the office desk, the tool bench, the home or that spare trunk that has become the catch-all for odds and ends, get into a condition where they need a good old-fashioned house cleaning. Peoples’ hearts are that way too. Your heart and my heart. They become cluttered with things—often good things—and when they do become cluttered they need a house-cleaning. No person is immune from this heart clutter. There is a time in each of our lives when we realize with crushing awareness the great need of our heart. We may not be able to tell a soul about our need but it is there. And when your need is the keenest, to whom can you turn? Those you love and trust may not understand. What you had trusted as a pillar of strength suddenly crumbles and you find yourself alone with your sorrow and disappointment. And when your problems and disappointments and heartaches have become more than you can bear—then Christ is there. Yes, Christ is there at your heart’s door. “ Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.” These are words not for someone else’s heart hut for your heart. Not for some time in the future but for now. No one need he poor, because, if he chooses, he can have Jesus for his own property and possession. No one need be downcast, for Jesus is the joy of heaven, and it is His joy to enter into sorrowful hearts. He knows your every care, your every sorrow. He knows the desires and longings of your heart. .And He is able to do something about them. H e is not your self. He knows you far better than you know yourself. We may- be bound by self and habits. But He is not yourself. He is above and beyond and around. And yet so near. We need never shout across the spaces to an absent God. He is nearer than our own soul, closer than our most secret thoughts. He is there at your heart’is door wanting to help. He is there and He is able. You’ve tried other things— you’ve trusted friends, organizations, yourself. And you’ve found no help for your deepest heart need. Now won’t you try Him? Won’t you trust His sacrifice for the sorrows and sins of your heart? It’s spring /zeart-cleanrng time. Hang your heart out in the cleansing sunshine of God’s love. — L. H. to 1928. He then founded Prophecy Magazine and remained its editor until the time of his death. Dr. Brooks was a prolific writer. He edited 23 Bible study courses, wrote 50 books on Bible themes, in numerable tracts and pamphlets and composed words and music to some 100 gospel songs. His “ Spirit of Truth and the Spirit of Error,” exposing cults and religious organizations, has sold over a hundred thousand copies. In recent years thousands of young people have become acquainted with Dr. Brooks’ Bible study books through courses given by the Navigators, headed by Dawson Trotman. The Navigators alone use some 1,000 of Dr. Brooks’ study books a month. Dr. Brooks was a trustee of Fuller Evangelistic Foundation and Pacific Coast representative of the American Board of Missions to the Jews. He was a member of the Eagle Rock Bap tist Church. The fearless stand taken by Dr. Brooks was no place more strongly felt than in Prophecy Magazine. The monthly, pocket-size magazine had a circulation of 15,000. Each month some 4,000 copies were sent free to missionaries. The magazine and his American Prophetic League were run with a spare frugality and whenever there was a few dollars left over from the monthly bills it was given away. Over the years some $150,000 was given out in this way. Dr. Brooks planned ahead so that the world-wide work would continue after his death. His wife, Laura and a board of trustees will be in charge of the magazine and the related work.
