May 2, 1954 Judgment on Jeroboam 1 Kings 14:5-10a, 12-16 Pointers on the Lesson Israel’s first king, Jeroboam, refused utterly to walk in the ways of the Lord. He set a sad example for all the kings of the Northern Kingdom who were to fol low him. Not one of them turned out well. Of every one it was said, “And he did evil in the sight of the Lord.” The promise was given to Jeroboam that the Lord would bless him if he would obey Him (11:37, 38), but the king had no desire to follow the Lord. However, in today’s lesson we discover that when the king was in trouble, then he turned unto the Lord in a sneaking sort of way. His son became ill. He must have felt that healing power resided in the Lord for he sent his wife in a disguised form to His prophet Ahijah to gain help for the child. The Reason For Judgment vv. 5-10a The disguise of the woman was of no avail. A person cannot hide from God. The Lord told the prophet of the decep tion of Jeroboam’s wife (w . 5, 6). The prophet in turn told the woman of the uselessness of her disguise, and also of the Lord’s judgment that was sure to come upon Jeroboam because of his sin (w . 7- 10a). The message of this section is well summed up in the words of the Lord to Jeroboam, “thou hast cast me behind thy back” (v. 9). What a sad reflection! It is a wonderful thing that God casts the sins of His people behind His back but almost inconceivable that men would cast such a God behind their backs. In ef fect is this not what men and women all over the world are doing with God? They have no place for Him in their lives. Such attitude, if pursued, will end in in evitable judgment. The Beginning of Judgment v v .. 12-16 The displeasure of God at Jeroboam was immediately to be manifest in the death of his child (w . 12, 13, cp. w . 17, 18). This child only, of the house of Jeroboam was to receive the proper rites of burial. Why? “ Because in him there is found some good thing toward the Lord God of Israel” (v. 13). Evidently he had some inclination toward the things of God. Children usually can be reached for Christ and the church. But too often they are kept away from both through
