Figure3. Number of employees in the participant’s respective company.

Most interviewees estimate their own company at level 2 of the Industrie 4.0 Maturity Index, some at level 3 and level 5, but no one at level 6 (see Figure 4). In general, it can be said that larger companies are already further along in the digital transformation than smaller companies.

Figure4. Current Digital Maturity Level: On which stage do you see yourself/your company?

The fact that most interviewees estimate their companies at level 2, with a few at levels 3 and 5 but none at level 6, suggests that levels 4 and 5 might not have been adequately explained by the creators of the questionnaire or understood by the participants. Additionally, there may be a bias leading companies to rate themselves higher than they actually are [3,8]. It is unlikely that any company is fully operating based on predictive models and making exclusively data-driven decisions beyond small pilot projects. This highlights a potential gap in understanding or communication regarding the expectations and criteria of the Industrie 4.0 Maturity Index.
