• The paper industry is rather conservative;

this signifies the slowness of the digitalisation process and the long road that still lies ahead for the industry. In response to the question: Are you familiar with statements such as ’Ensure that data and information are sufficiently accurate, reliable and secure’ from ISO standards on quality management or environmental or energy management systems (ISO 9001, ISO 14001 or ISO 50001)? If so, how do you deal with these requirements and ensure data quality and quantity? almost three quarters of those who answered said yes (see Figure 6). The other quarter are smaller companies. According to their own statements, data quality and quantity are ensured via the enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems and employees’ own responsibility. Some even carry out internal audits and random checks.

Figure6. Data quality assurance.

Figures 7–17 show that many people have to work with data on a daily basis, that it is available in the company and that it is usually not scattered across different departments. Awareness of the relevance of data is also high in the company, is a very important basis for decision-making, and is a critical resource for achieving strategic goals in many places. However, the majority of interviewees are confronted with poor data quality (incorrect or missing entries, etc.). Fortunately, all but four interviewees responded that there is a defined contact person for data and its correction. Ten interviewees have a process for improving data quality (six answered true, four partly true).
