James Monroe Elementary School Wins Art Grant

James Monroe Elementary School has been awarded an Arts Lab Residency Grant. Through this opportunity, second and third grade students are participating in a ten-day step-dance residency led by teaching artist Maxine Lyle of Soul Steps. Students are engaging in rhythm, movement, and collaboration as they learn the foundations of step dancing. Principal Cyndi Tufaro reflected on the significance of the grant. “We are thrilled to receive this generous grant” said Mrs. Cyndi Tufaro, Principal of James Monroe. “Providing quality arts programming to our students has always been a goal at James Monroe; with the help of the Arts Lab Residency, we can now offer our students inspiring, arts-rich experiences beyond the scope of the classroom activities. Bringing dance education into the school setting helps ensure equity and inclusion in the arts. It opens the door for all students to explore dance as a form of self-expression, cultural connection, and physical activity, regardless of their background or resources.”

This residency expands access to arts-based learning and supports the ongoing commitment to student creativity and engagement.
