Jafar works in a chair factory and dreams of going to school. Sue and her brother wait for Dad siting on a swing. Barry overhears his parents are getting divorced whilst seated at a food court. Focused on the metaphor of the “seated child”, the anecdotes show characters in vertiginous and transformative life moments.

It is 1902 when Clarry is born in the United Kingdom and her mother dies after giving birth. From that moment on, her home is overrun by sadness and she and her brother Peter grow up with a cold and distant father. Joy arrives every summer when the siblings visit their grandparents in Cornwall. There, together with their cousin Rupert, they enjoy the freedom of the countryside and the beach, until the First World War begins; but they fight to stay strong, like the larks that fly over the battle fields, reminding soldiers that life goes on.

Jane lives in Arizona but despite her parents being Mexican, they never taught her Spanish; she was born in the United States after all. Now that she is in high school and yearns to reconnect with her roots, she decides to learn the language. Jane starts keeping a diary in Spanish, inviting readers to discover her talents and world views. Her life changes when she joins the debate team and meets the guy who'll be her first boyfriend.

The Japan portrayed in these seven stories is an imaginary archipelago that emerges from Hokusai's floating world and the anecdotes people have been telling for more than a thousand years. A compelling homage to Japanese folklore in haibun prose-poems.
