16 th -century colonial Peru
Christianity by 1572, Toledo’s reforms had paved the way for the eradication of the Incan religion. Even despite Taki Onqoy , natives now lived in reducciones of unwavering Spanish influence, where preachers of Incan religion had no access, exacerbated by the murder of the Incan figurehead in 1572, who was seen as divine and related to the gods. The introduction of Spanish art and architecture caused the absence of Incan artworks, particularly in reducciones, as Spanish structures such as Cuzco Cathedral were built over razed Incan palaces, detailed with religious art of Spanish Mannerism, a technique which would be taught to native artists. Although the disputes between the Catholics and Incans over the funerary rites did portray conflicted loyalties to European values, the Spanish were able to control and limit even the most significant Incan traditions by 1572. Evidently, the Spanish were most successful in political control, managing to eliminate any Incan political influence as well as furthering Spanish influence with the resettlement programme.
