all. In the purpose of God no man ever “ arrives” in this life; there is something far better. Men who are alienated from God have lost the vision of glory and the perfection of character designed by God for every man. Estranged man is con tent to strive toward the bubbles of worldly attainments — riches, power, prestige, vanity of worldly wisdom. But these things do not constitute life’s true meaning, God destined man to some thing higher than this, namely, that man should be like Christ and enjoy Him forever (v. 14). The very first step in the attainment of this high goal is to know Christ as personal Saviour and Lord (vv. 8, 9). The second step is to be fully occupied with the Christian life (v. 10). The third step is the recognition of the pro gressiveness of the Christian life (v. 12), the humility that acknowledges the lack of present perfection. The fourth step is the exercise of a holy determination to attain to all that God intends for the believer’s life (vv. 13, 14). When a man’s life is thus directed he will ultimately reach that blessed goal of Christian per fection and will be forever like Christ (1 John 3:1, 2).
