Often the followers of Christ today have opportunities of confessing Him, but their hearts are like the tin, refus ing to make Him known. Because of Peter’s confession, Christ said to him, “ Blessed art thou, Simon . . . for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven” (Matt. 16:17). Are other people reminded of the Lord Jesus by your life and your words? Let us resolve to be like the glass heart, al ways confessing Christ. Objects: A powerful electric light bulb connected to an extension cord and several smaller bulbs of much lower wattage. Lesson: This powerful electric bulb is much more noticeable when it is lighted. In looking at it I am reminded of the time when Christ took Peter, James and John up into a high mountain to pray. As our Lord was praying, His face and clothing were filled with light. Christ was always the Light of the world, but people did not always realize that He was the Light. But on this occasion His light and glory shone out through Him in a way that it had never done before upon earth. Christ was transfigured be fore them. The best illustration I know of for the Transfiguration is this electric bulb. The electricity which is generated up on the mountains shines out through the bulb. Look at these other electric bulbs. They are cold and lifeless. As I look at them I am reminded of the words of Paul, found in Romans 12:2: “ And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed.” The word here translated transformed is the same word in the Greek language as the word transfigured used to describe that which happened to Christ. Is it true that God wants Christians to be transfigured before the world? Yes, he wants us to reveal the light and glory of God to others. I think this is what Christ meant when He said: “ Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matt. 5:16). See how these little bulbs bum when the electric current is turned into them. As the Christian allows God to trans- Jan. 18. 1953 T alking and T elling

form him, the light and glory of God will shine out through his words and ac tions, and will cause those who are in darkness to see the Light of the world. When Christ was transfigured, a voice said, “ This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him” (Matt. 17:5). God is pleased with His children today when they are transformed and let their lights shine for Him in the dark world.

Objects: A small heart cut from a bar of yellow soap, and a heart about the same size cut from a rubber sponge.

Lesson: The difference between these two hearts is not in their colors. One is yellow and the other brown. The real difference is in the way they respond when scratched. They are so much like Christians that I have called them Harriet and Hannah. You are wondering how they can be like Christians. Watch them when they are hurt. I will scratch Harriet with my fingernail. I try to smooth it over and ask her to forgive me for being unkind, but the cut still remains. She keeps the hurt and remembers it always. You can see the mark clearly. We shall give Hannah the same treat ment and see how she acts. She has been hurt as badly as Harriet, but she never shows it nor remembers it. Some Christians are like Hannah— when they are hurt they immediately forgive and forget and go on living without being marred by the hurt. Other Christians are like Harriet—they are easily hurt and never forgive and for get. I am sure that the Christian who pleases God most is the one who, like Hannah, forgives and forgets. We read in Matthew 6:14, “ For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heav enly Father will also forgive you.” Peter asked Christ, “Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?” (Matt. 18:21). In the 22nd verse we have Christ’s answer, “ I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but until seventy times seven.” I think that Christ meant by this that we were to forgive others over and over, if necessary, and never stop.
