Safe, Healthy, and Back to Business

Like many businesses in California, we were closed for a couple months in the spring. In May, we returned to the office and started seeing patients once again. We picked up where we left off. Our patients have been excited to return, as well! Many people had not left their homes for an extended period of time other than to run basic errands. They were thrilled at the prospect of a routine dental appointment and teeth cleaning or to finally get that anti-aging or cosmetic dental treatment that they’d been putting off for months. One thing that surprised me is how many out- of-town patients have made appointments and visited our dental spa this summer. Many people, including those of us at the office, strive for a return to normalcy, though that is still a long time off. But we are doing what we can to get close to what we all remember as normal, while still maintaining safety protocols.

pandemic, we are still seeing many patients. Life is almost back to normal, with a few adjustments.

One adjustment is that we have put a larger emphasis on virtual consults. Virtual consults have always been highly beneficial for patients who live some distance away, as a means to discuss their needs before they commit to travel. Now, we are seeing more patients, both local and nonlocal, for virtual consults. During the two months our office was closed, I remained as busy as ever! In fact, I used a lot of the time to finish writing my new book, “The Toxic Overload: The Truth About Your Body’s Natural Defenses and How to Experience Whole-Body Health.”

Now, we are seeing more patients, both local and nonlocal, for virtual consults.

If you follow this newsletter or have read the articles on our website, DrMaddahi.com, then you will be familiar with some of the subject matter covered in “The Toxic Overload.” One of the big topics is understanding the relationship between oral health and whole-body health, along with understanding the microbiomes that exist in the body. If you are interested in learning more about “The Toxic Overload,” visit our website or find the book on Amazon by searching “The Toxic Overload.” Go directly to the book by visiting https://amzn.to/39ghH7N. We will be talking more about this book in the coming months. Aside from completing work on my new book, I also spent a lot of time with my family. In many ways, the two months away from the office were a blessing. It was a good opportunity to get back the basics and have quality time together, as I’m sure many families have done this year.

It has been great to see everyone — patients and staff, alike. Everyone at the office is safe, healthy, and has been tested. I’m happy to report that everyone has tested negative. On top of the testing, we have taken additional steps to keep the spa sterile. We wear masks and gowns and have procedures in place to ensure there is no cross-contamination. People often forget that because we are a dental office, we are used to cleanliness protocols. We have always taken universal precautions to keep our staff and patients safe from many potential pathogens or illnesses that anyone coming into the office may have been exposed to. Everything in the office is cleaned and sterilized. In recent months, we have simply doubled our efforts.

Since we reopened in May, we have worked hard to get back into our daily routine. While we are not as busy as we were in the months before the

SLEEP BRUXISM IN CHILDREN

Causes and Consequences

When parents check on their children sleeping in the next room, they want to hear the sounds of easy sleep: slow, rhythmic breathing and the occasional sigh or two. However, sometimes they might hear a soft grinding noise. This is when a child clenches or grinds their teeth together, which is called bruxism. Diurnal Bruxing and Sleep Bruxism In children, two types of bruxism occur unconsciously. Diurnal bruxing is when a child grinds their teeth throughout the day, often

8-year-olds at 20 public schools in Brazil to try to pinpoint the cause of SB. Parents and caregivers observed their children for symptoms related to SB and also provided information about any emotional or behavioral problems the children might be having. The study found that SB was a common condition in over 30% of the children in the sample, and there was a higher prevalence of it in children with reported social, emotional, and behavioral problems.

The Impact of Sleep Bruxism While SB is considered a normal sporadic condition for children, if it’s regular and intense, it can harm the child. Constant teeth grinding can result in moderately to severely damaged teeth, pain, and restless sleep. What’s more, if the condition isn’t caught early, it can cause severe facial and jaw problems, such as a temporomandibular joint disorder. If you notice your child is suffering from SB, it’s time to take action. Talk to your dentist to learn what you can do for your child to help them through this and to preserve their bright, healthy smile.

without realizing they’re doing it. This is the easiest to fix because once brought to the child’s attention, measures can be taken to address it. Sleep bruxism (SB) also occurs unconsciously, but because the child is asleep, they cannot consciously stop doing it. The Reason Behind Sleep Bruxism A recent American Dental Association study has shown that the prevalence of SB in children is often associated with emotional and behavioral problems. The study, published March 26, 2020, included a cross-sectional sample of 556

Relief Is Possible

John Finlay of ‘Tiger King’ Sports a New Smile and Renewed Confidence

“Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness” became Netflix’s breakout hit this spring, and as a result, we all learned a little more about the insane world of big- cat captivity in the U.S. There were many compelling storylines in “Tiger King,” but between major feuds, the outrageous tiger abuse, and a murder-for-hire plot, viewers noticed John Finlay had a very distinct smile with several missing teeth and clear signs of decay. According to Finlay, the show falsely portrayed his poor smile as a result of heavy drug use. Finlay has struggled with oral health issues since he was a teenager, and genetics played a major role in his missing and misaligned teeth. Just over a year ago, Finlay decided it was time to correct his smile and begin a new chapter. In the past, Finlay’s teeth had been repaired with bridgework, which can successfully fill in the gaps left by missing teeth, but chronic issues left Finlay in need of a more extensive fix. In June 2019, Finlay reportedly underwent treatment to remove his damaged teeth and replace them with new, permanent

implants. The implants were designed to look like Finlay’s real teeth and function just like natural teeth.

The result is a healthy, beautiful smile and confidence-booster for Finlay, who is celebrating six years of sobriety. As Finlay told the media platform Refinery29, “I did this dental transformation as a way of closing a prior chapter of my life, so it also signified my new chapter, the new me. I am not someone who is very vain or necessarily minds what others look like as I never judge a book by its cover, but for my self-esteem, the new teeth have done wonders.” Like Finlay, many Americans struggle with genetic predispositions to oral health conditions. This often leads to further problems, pain, and diminished confidence. However, as Finlay demonstrates, relief and treatment are possible, no matter how prolonged the damage to your teeth has been. Proper dental care can result in renewed confidence and a healthy smile you will be proud to show off. Refer a friend, and get a brighter smile! That’s right, every time you refer a friend to Dr. Maddahi, you get one FREE teeth cleaning!

3 Travel Destinations Where Photos Are a No-Go

Vatican considers it disrespectful to photograph such a holy place.

However, there’s more to the story. In 1980, Japan’s Nippon Television Network Corporation bought exclusive rights to all photos and videos of the interior of the chapel because they funded the renovation of the chapel. While the Japanese corporation no longer holds these rights, the Vaticanmaintains the “no photos” rule. Uluru Also known as Ayers Rock, Uluru is one of the largest sandstone rock formations in the world. Located in the middle of Australia, Uluru is highly regarded by the Anangu Aboriginal people who call the region home. Photography around parts of the rock is forbidden out of respect for the Anangu people’s beliefs, specifically Tjukurpa , or the time when the world was created. Certain areas around Uluru are used for gender- specific rituals, and as a result, members of the opposite sex must never see these locales, including in photos. The Anangu say the restriction of photography ensures they adhere to their beliefs and never lay eyes on these sacred spots, even accidentally through a photograph.

No Photos Allowed 3 Travel Hot Spots Where Photography Is Forbidden

What is traveling without taking photos? With the excellent cameras on our smartphones and endless platforms to share our snapshots on, we’re takingmore pictures than ever. But did you know there are certain destinations where visitors are not allowed to take photos? Here are three places where youmust put the camera away. The Eiffel Tower Right now, you’re probably thinking about all the pictures of the Eiffel Tower you’ve seen or even taken yourself. After all, the Eiffel Tower is one of the most popular tourist spots in the world, but under French law, taking a photo of the Eiffel Tower at night — and then distributing

that photo — is illegal. That includes posting the picture to social media.

French officials can send you a cease-and-desist order if they find your night photo because the tower’s nighttime light display is copyrighted. It was installed by French artist Pierre Bideau who owns the rights to the display. Do French officials search the web for your vacation photos? No, but they can take action if it’s brought to their attention. The Sistine Chapel While the Sistine Chapel may be home to incredible works of art originally painted by Michelangelo, it is also a place of worship, and the
