The Defeat that Was Victory flJ?HERE is a story that when the Battle of Waterloo was being fought, all England, waiting in anxiety for the result of that day, was dependent upon the sig nals flashed from station to station by sem aphore. One of those stations was on the tower of Winchester Cathedral. Late in the day, it received the signal, “Wellington defeated.” Just at that moment, one of those sudden English clouds of fog shut out the light falling upon the land. The news of disaster quickly circulated in the city. After a little while, it reached Lon don, and the whole land was in gloom, bor dering upon despair. Then the fog lifted, and the message was completed: “Well ington defeated the enemy.” Sorrow turn ed into joy, defeat into victory. So it was with Jesus, when He died upon the cross. Hope died out in the hearts of men. After the crucifixion, the fog of disappointment settled upon the world, so that it caught only the semaphore signal, “Christ defeated.” But on the third day, the fog lifted, and there was flashed to the world the complete signal, not of defeat, but of victory, not of death, but of life. Christ defeated death! —J. C. M assee in The Ten Greatest Chapters in the Bible. —G ospel M essage . The Secret of Power P hilippians 4:4-7 1. Praise (v. 4). 2. Patience (vs. 5, 6). 3. The Four Resurrections T o many people , the word “resurrec tion” suggests one general raising of the dead, when all will stand be fore the judgment seat to have it deter mined whether they, are saved or lost. This is not the scriptural conception. The Bible speaks of four resurrections, one past, one present, and two future. I. Christ’s Resurrection (1 Cor. 15:20). Its importance cannot be overesti mated. 1. Christianity stands or falls with this (1 Cor. 15:12-19). 2. It is proof of Christ’s deity (Rom. 1:4). 3. It is proof of God’s acceptance of Jesus’ sacrifice for sin (Rom. 4: . 25). II. The Believer’s Resurrection. This will take place at Christ’s com ing (1 Cor-. 15:23; 1 Thess. 4:16, 17). III. The Resurrection of Unbelievers. This occurs one thousand years after the resurrection of believers (Rev. 20:5, 11-15). IV. The Present Resurrection. This is not physical, but spiritual (John 5:24, 25) but it is just-as real as the physical resurrection. This is what being a Christian meant to Paul and the New Testament believers (Eph. 2:1, 4-6). Whether or not we have had this spiritual resurrection, will determine whether we are to have part in the resurrection of believers—“the resur rection unto life”—or the resurrec tion of unbelievers—“the resurrection unto condemnation.” —J ohn A. H ubbard . The Resurrection of Christ 1. Proclaim it as a great historic fact (Acts 4:33). 2. Ponder it as a great redemptive truth (Eph. 1:19, 20). 3. Pray for a full experience of its power (Phil. 3:10). 4. Praise God for its guarantee of things to come (1 Cor. 15:50-57). —J.C.P. The Mighty God I saiah 9 :6 I. Mighty in His Pre-existent State. 1. In creation. 2. In authority. 3. In providence. II. Mighty in His Physical State. 1. In influence. a. Causing Mary to ponder. b. Causing the angels to sing. c. Causing the wise men to search and give. d. Causing the multitudes to journey. 2. In wisdom. a. Manifested in the temple at twelve years of age. b. Manifested in the temptation. c. Manifested in calling the twelve. d. Manifested in His silence before Pilate.
