Health units for both Eastern Ontario and the Greater Ottawa Area urge everyone to get their winter flu shots with the start of the new year. One reason for the push is the H1N1 flu virus is making another comeback. Reported cases of H1N1 flu virus are showing up in Ontario, Québec and West- ern Canada. The Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) has reported "low sporadic flu activ- ity" within its jurisdiction so far but officials expect more flu cases could start appearing after students return to school following the Christmas break. There is a chance then that cases of H1N1 flu virus could result. The H1N1 flu virus created a global pan- demic during the 2009-2010 flu season because it was a new strain not covered by the usual flu vaccine. Children under five, seniors, and those with weakened immune systems were the most-at-risk groups for H1N1. "It is important for everyone, but espe- cially for children under five years old and those born after 1957, to get vaccinated, " stated Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, EOHU chief medical health officer. "This year’s flu shot is a good match against H1N1." Anyone who has already had and recov- ered from H1N1 or received the vaccine against that strain of flu virus may still have some protection. But Roumeliotis urged these individuals to also consider getting another flu shot. Flu vaccine is available from local medical clinics, and also from EOHU offices by ap- pointment by phone to 1-800-267-7120. The Ottawa Public Health Office (OPH) is offering extra immunization clinics for chil- dren under five in the Greater Ottawa Area at its office at 100 Constellation Crescent on Jan. 7, 8, 9, 14, and 16. These clinics are by appointment by phone to 580-6744. Some pharmacies in the Ottawa area and EOHU region are also certified to provide flu vac- cinations for adults. Flu symptoms include fever, coughing, severe headache, and/or chills. Basic treat- ment involves rest, drinking lots of water or juices, and taking aspirin or other simi- lar pain relievers. Warm baths and gargling with warm water is also effective. Drinking alcohol or smoking is not recommended. Health officials also urge residents to practise proper hygiene, including regular washing of hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based sanitizer and to cover the mouth and nose when coughing or sneez- ing. Stay home if sick to avoid spreading the flu virus.
