THE KING’S BUSINESS

Bible lessons with one o f your Bible women, and I seek your columns to express publicly my appreciation. It was through "my urgent request that Mrs. L. gave me personal and private lessons. I was in her clags at Highland Park Baptist Church and readily perceived the great value of her teaching.' Expecting soon to leave Los Angeles. I felt that I must, if possible, get more from her than just the weekly class. Although overwhelmed with work, great woman that she is, she rejoiced at another opportunity for service and in her busy life made room for my daily private lessons, and it is o f the woman and her work that /T 'H E R E was quite a number of boys in the car-barn that afternoon playing pool, cards, checkers, many making out their schedules and re-arranging runs, the extras lounging about waiting for calls, hoping almost against hope, oftentimes, to hear their names called to come in for a little work, enabling them to earn some thing to bring heme for wife and babies. There are many experiences our boys have of p very discouraging nature before fhey\ get on regular runs, and even then the traveling public is not always courteous and considerate, so we esteem it quite a privilege to be able to bring them a mes sage o f oheer in song and testimony and point them to the One who is touched with the feeling of our infirmities, having been tempted in all points as we are, yet apart from sin, agd whb alone knows how to succor those who are tempted. Directly in front o f the speaker sat one o f these “ extra” boys, his big brown eyes fairly glued to the man who was talking. When the meeting was over we chatted with some o f the fellows and then sauntered over to where he sat. It wasn’t hard to steer the talk along the lines o f a personal knowledge o f the Lord Jesus, and the

I wish to speak. She has a scriptural knowledge unsurpassed by any man or woman I have ever met, and her ready store o f apt illustrations makes her lessons very effective. She teaches the Bible, and not about the Bible; she sets forth God’s Word, and not man’s ppinion. I count it one o f my chiefest blessings to have been a pupil o f hers, and pray God’s blessings upon her; may she be permitted to touch and help many other women as she has me. It has been in my heart to say these words before now, but hindrances incident to moving and getting settled in our new home have delayed this writing.” O ----- --------- blessedness o f really knowing what it meant to be saved. He told us in what religious school he had -been brought up, but that he had never known real peace and rest, and had no victory over besetting sins in his personal life, and so had drifted away from ev^n the outward form. There was such a refreshing spirit o f self-condemna tion and openness to the truth o f God’s Word, and such ease in digging down to the very foot o f things that we did not think it wise to press him just then for a decision, for we find there is grave danger o f going beyond the -work o f the Holy Spirit in men, which must be prayerfully and spirit ually guarded against lest we force souls to a mere intellectual assent to the Gospel message. However we secured our boy’s address, left him with some clear, helpful Gospel tracts, and then during the week held on to God in prayer for the soaking-in o f the precious seed. It was another delight ful surprise to learn that his dear little wife had been a member o f a Sunday School class taught by the worker’s wife many years ago; also the old grandmother, who makes her home with them, was a dear friend o f the days o f yore; so the approach was easy and our entrance into the home welcome.
