SpotlightFebruary2019

By Jamie Barrie I f you were at the 2019 CES, which is an annual trade show organized by the Consumer Tech- nology Association, in Las Vegas, you would have seen the newest trend in car technology in large vehicle displays. Bigger is better when it comes to displays these days for automakers with examples of all sizes up to an amazing 48-inch display screen found inside the Chinese-funded company’s M-Byte car, is proving the undeniable trend in the automotive world. The average size globally of a vehicle’s centre display in 2018 was 7.7 inches, according to IHS Markit, and it is projected to grow to 8.4 inches by 2024. For the record, these are not just for electric vehicles like Tesla or other luxury vehicles makers, this trend is upping the display ante on all vehicles with the new 2019 RAM 1500 truck boasting an impressive 12-inch vertical display on its dashboard.

It is not just a change in display size, but also in its functionality as these are replacing traditional buttons and dials in vehicles making the display more of a command centre for the driver with information at their fingertips as we move to a more living in a display-centred world. Automakers are also adding additional feature with this new technology such as rear-view mirror display to project images from a rear-facing camera, while HUDs or “heads-up displays” are becoming more and more popular and is the fast- est-growing display segment. There are currently about 6.3 million cars in the world that have these displays, but that figure is expected to balloon to 14.1 million by 2024, as this technology allows for valuable information to be visible to the driver on the windshield of the vehicle. Automakers say that if done properly, driver distrac- tion would decline, not rise with a larger screen as drivers would no longer need to struggle through a myriad of options cluttered on a small screen.
