JOE MONTANA MAKING MOVES ON A DIFFERENT FIELD Montana is well known as a lead on the field with four Super Bowl wins over his 15 years in the NFL. Now the Hall of Fame quarterback is looking to quarterback San Jose, California-based Caliva with a $75 million investment in a pot operator. Caliva said it will use the investment to grow a company that includes a farm, a retail store, distri- bution centre and a delivery service. The former San Francisco 49ers star said his venture capital firm was investing in an industry he believes “can provide relief to many people and can make a serious impact on opioid use or addic- tion.” Montana is the latest, and one of the most promi- nent, professional athletes to openly endorse mar- ijuana use. Montana, 62, hasn’t publicly said if he uses mari- juana, but this isn’t his first investment in the mar- ijuana industry. In 2017, Montana took part in a $4.1 million investment in Herb, which produces and distributes marijuana-related news and enter- tainment. Now some scientists think the proteins that form those plaques might actually be part of the brain’s defense against bacteria, including Porphyro- monas gingivalis. More research needs to be done, but given the possibility that there is a connection between chronic gum disease and Alzheimer’s disease should encourage more people spending more time on their dental health than they currently do, if for nothing else than to have healthier teeth and gums with the additional benefits being consid- ered a bonus.
In case you needed more reason to floss, scien- tists say a growing body of research indicates that Alzheimer’s disease might be linked to Porphyro- monas gingivalis, a strain of bacteria that’s also known for causing chronic gum disease. Scientists know structures called amyloid plaques are often found in the brains of people who died with Alzheimer’s disease, but so far efforts to curb formation of those plaques haven’t done much to stop the disease.
