IS YOUR PRACTICE READY FOR MBIS? A Change in the Medicare System

Identity thieves will use any information they can get their hands on in order to steal from unsuspecting people. While it may not be as commonly discussed as credit card theft, medical identity theft is a real and growing problem. People use medical information to receive prescriptions and visit doctors pretending that they are someone else. In an effort to stem incidences of medical identity theft, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will be removing Social Security numbers from Medicare cards and replacing them with a new Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) number. Under the old system, a patient’s Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN) was based on their Social Security number. This system was convenient, but it also made it incredibly easy for your SSN to fall in the wrong hands. Imagine if your driver’s license number was the same has your SSN. Sounds crazy, right? But that’s exactly how it worked under the old Medicare system.

basketball and football fan, and his favorite teams are the Suns, Spurs, and Vikings. The Vikings might seem an odd choice, but Hunter has a story behind it. “I became a Vikings fan because one of my middle school teachers was.” More than anything, we love Hunter for his great energy and ultrahappy attitude. “He’s definitely beloved here,” Neili adds, “especially by the ladies.”
