SILVER JUBILEE GAMES Sport, tradition and modern technology

This year’s Winter Olympics will be held in Italy, jointly hosted by Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, from 6 th to 22 nd February. And everyone will be able to enjoy the Games, even those who aren’t particularly interested in sport

W e’re leading you to the slopes of the Dolomites this winter, to the beautiful Milan and the unforgettable Cortina. And de- spite there being so much for you to do there – from enjoying the scenery and the art to indulging in shopping – the focus at this time will be on sport, as Italy is hosting the 2026 Winter Olym- pics. The opening ceremony will be held at Milan’s iconic Giuseppe Meazza Sta- dium, aka the San Siro, with the clos- ing ceremony planned for the Verona Olympic Arena, a Roman amphithe- atre located at the heart of the city

known as the hometown of Romeo and Juliet. By the time that ceremo- ny rolls around, the Olympic Torch will have visited all 110 Italian provinces and traversed more than 12,000 kilo- metres over the course of 63 days pri- or to arriving in Milan on 6 th February. Most of the winter sport competitions will take place in the Dolomites, on the territory of Cortina d’Ampezzo, one of Europe’s most famous ski centres. Ap- proximately 2,900 athletes from more than 90 countries are expected to par- ticipate, making the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics the year’s big- gest international sporting event. Traditional sports like downhill skiing, ski jumping, speed skating, biathlon

and ice hockey will still be at the centre of attention, but the 2026 Games also includes new disciplines that are more popular among young people. This will be an opportunity for spectators to see innovations – ranging from electron- ic timers to high-tech cameras that fol- low athletes from the air. The official mascots of the games are Tina and Milo, anthropomorphised sibling stoats that are intended to sym- bolise the spirit of the Olympics and Paralympics. Tina is the Olympic mas- cot and has lighter fur. She represents creativity, curiosity and dreams, and her message is “dream big”, because beauty and art can change the world. Milo is the Paralympic mascot and has darker fur. His story is particularly in- spiring because he was born missing a leg and learned to walk using his tail. Milo symbolises resilience, resource- fulness and the joy of play, and his message is that “obstacles are tram- polines”. They will be accompanied by six small snowdrop flowers, known as ‘The Flo’, which additionally symbol- ise joy, friendship and the spirit of to- getherness. The inaugural Winter Olympic Games took place in Chamonix, Switzerland, back in 1924. The Games have since developed to become a global specta- cle, which will this year be hosted by
