Built on the site of the former Church of Santa Maria alla Scala, after which it was named, this magnificent edifice soon became the centre of the cultural life of the city’s aristocracy and artistic elite. Over the centuries, La Scala has hosted premiere performances of works by greats like Verdi, Puccini, Rossini etc. Its history is inextricably linked to the rise of Italian opera, but also tumultuous events like wartime destruction and multi-year renovations. La Scala is today home not only to opera, but also to ballet, symphony concerts and a prestigious music academy. It continues to preserve the spirit of art through tradition, whilst also opening its doors to new generations... Finally, don’t bid farewell to Milan before checking out the Leonardo da Vinci masterpiece that is the Last Supper at the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. It is the use of perspective, among other things, that makes this painting so dramatic and majestic. In order to achieve such an effect, da Vinci hammered nails into the wall and strung up ropes. Measuring an incredible 8.8 by 4.6 metres, the painting was created in 1495 and was painted directly on the wall, though it isn’t a fresco. Leonardo depicted the precise moment when Jesus told his apostles that one of them would betray him. The Last Supper has inspired popular culture, prompting versions by Salvador Dali and Andy Warhol, among others. Of course, you shouldn’t miss out on the chance to see this work in Milan, though one problem is how difficult it is to secure tickets, which are sold-out well in advance and thus have to be booked online.
