P antone has announced its Colour of the Year for 2026, and the choice speaks in tones that are more hushed than you might expect. Dubbed Cloud Dancer, this soft, airy shade of off-white sig- nals a shift away from bright state- ment hues towards form, texture and intent — an approach that’s already gaining momentum in fashion and in- teriors. Pantone has been selecting the colour that will mark the culture of the year ahead since 1999. “We wanted to highlight to our audience how what is taking place in our global culture is ex- pressed and reflected through the lan- guage of colour,” said Pantone Color Institute VP Laurie Pressman, speak- ing about the company’s wildly suc- cessful annual project. “We realised that we’re living in a transitional time. We’re looking for truth. We’re looking for possibilities. We’re looking for a new way of liv- ing because of everything that’s go- ing on — it just feels like, ‘well, wait a minute, how did we get here? How do we reset? We’ve been overcommitted; we’re overstimulated. And we want re- lief.” That relief comes in the form of “a lofty white that reads like a breath of fresh air and is imbued with a feeling of serenity. It’s not a stark white, it’s a specifically natural shade of white,” ex- plains Pantone CEO Lee Eisman. This is something of an unexpected choice. Considering the current social and cultural climate, declaring a shade of white the colour of the year is a bold statement. At the same time, observ- ing the world around us — which is first and foremost what the Institute does — it’s almost as if there were no FRESH NEW START Dress for cloud dancing Love it or hate it, the 2026 Pantone Colour of the Year is a quiet power move
