HOTEL HOPPING A phenomenon of digital age travellers Welcome to the incredibly exciting world of one of the most interesting new travel trends

T he formula for the ideal hol- iday has always been simple: select a destination, find the perfect hotel, unpack your suitcases and settle in com- fortably for the duration. However, trav- ellers have increasingly been doing some- thing a bit different of late. Instead of staying in one place, they pack again half- way through and relocate – sometimes to the other side of a city, and sometimes just down the street. This trend has come to be known as “hotel hopping”, a term describing a single holiday that includes staying at multiple hotels, often around the same destination. Unlike traditional mul- ti-city itineraries, this isn’t about trav- elling great distances. It’s about variety – experiencing different styles, neigh- bourhoods and happenings during one holiday. A couple visiting Paris, for in- stance, could start their holiday with two nights at some charming boutique hotel on the Left Bank, then relocate to a luxury hotel in the vicinity of the Champs-Élysées. A family could divide their stay in Barcelona between a sea- side location and a flat with character in the Gothic Quarter. In other words, the destination doesn’t change – only the perspective.

There’s no single factor that has caused this trend – its emergence re- lates more to a perfect combination of the evolution of leisure travel, changes in lifestyle and a desire for novelty. To- day’s travellers increasingly seek expe- riences. Instead of forking out for a sin- gle luxury stay, many prefer to combine: two nights enjoying a top-notch facili- ty, followed by a few nights spent some- where closer to the local rhythm. Why limit yourself to one environment when the city offers ten? In sprawling cities like Shanghai, New York or London, each neighbour- hood feels like a small destination in its own right. Opting to find accommoda- tion in different areas enables visitors to immerse themselves in a city’s contrasts fully. Holidaymakers can spend the first part of their holiday in a busy, central ar- ea where they’re able to see the sights, then relocate to a quieter residential ar- ea where they can enjoy cafés, parks and local markets. In a technical sense, travellers have been switching between hotels for years, particularly backpackers and “nomads”. What’s new here is that the idea has been embraced by the mainstream, stimulated by online travel platforms and social me- dia trends. Hotel hopping has thus shift-

ed from a logistical necessity to a lifestyle choice. The concept has even earned its own buzzword, with 2026 travel indus- try forecasts singling out ‘Hotel Hop’ as a defining behaviour of younger travellers, representing “the best way to keep hol- idays exciting, without increasing your carbon footprint”. TikTok and Instagram influencers are now posting “hotel hop- ping diaries”, showcasing contrasting aesthetics ranging from art-deco glam- our to minimalist wellness retreats—all within a single destination. Planning is the key to enjoying ho- tel hopping. Choose hotels in differing parts of a city that offer something spe- cific. Take advantage of luggage stor- age services if check-in times vary, and don’t overdo it: two hotels per holiday is usually enough to feel the advantag- es without tiring yourself out, especially the first time. Don’t forget that modern travel is less about ticking items off a list and more about amassing sensations: the hubbub of one neighbourhood and the tranquillity of another; two hotels separated by just a few metro stations, yet light years apart when it comes to at- mosphere. Hotel hopping is actually a reflection of the restless spirit of today’s traveller: curious, flexible, and with a de- sire to make every moment count.
