F reda remembers watching her mother sew when she was 10 and developing a passion then for sewing and designing her own clothes. She recognises that one of her biggest skills is being able to think of a fashion design and “bring it to life”, describing her eight- year-old daughter Emma as her number one inspiration. With
the exposure she has gained from her handmade banana stem craft products in the competition, Freda has now been able to pursue and launch her dream tailoring business, which she has named Emma’s Clothing

STEVEN KAIKAI BANANA PAPER BAGS W hile searching online in 2017 for cheaper construction materials to build his house in Mekeo village (Kairuku, Central), Steven found information from India, Africa and Asia on how banana tree fibre was used to create paper. This sparked an idea of creating a PNG-made biodegradable paper – and particularly paper bags as a plastic-alternative shopping or gift bag – made from a readily available waste product of discarded banana stalks and stems after the
fruit is harvested. Steven believes PNG is poised to embrace such a sustainable product, and ties in with the Government’s 2019 ban on single-use plastic bags. The paper is currently made by hand by Steven,
