Beware of Sin

His Life in Us

The Name of Jesus

“Ye are they which justify your selves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God” (Luke 16:15). A lifeboat was built in London many years ago. While the workmen were busy with their task, one man lost his hammer. Whether he knew it or not, it was nailed up in the bottom of the boat. He probably thought the only harm done would be the loss of one hammer. But the boat was put into service, and as it rocked on the waves, the hammer was tossed to and fro. Little by little it wore for itself a track, until it had worn through the planking and keel, right down to the copper plating, be fore it was discovered. Only that plate i of copper kept the boat from sinking.! A little sin, or a little rebellion, al little self-will indulged, may wreck| a life and bring dire distress anc heartbreak to those who are concerned Churches have been broken, and cor gregations scattered, by the subtil suggestion of our adversary who goejf about seeking whom he may devoj —The Sunday School Timeq + + + All Power Is in His Hant “ Fear ye not, stand still, and the salvation of the Lord” (Ex. l l The Egyptians were here purl the children of Israel, and when| came up against the mighty of the Red Sea, the Lord spoj Moses and told him to “ lift u| rod, and stretch out thine hand Moses obeyed, the waters of tlj divided and the children o f , passed over on dry ground, not always on the side of the I tude, nor does He always shq mighty power in spectacular He has often achieved His p|

“For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shep herd . . . of your souls” (1 Pet. 2:25). The more we rest on this fact— that we do not know the way we are going, but that we have a Guide who does know; that we do not know how to accomplish our service, but that He never leaves us to devise our own service—the more restful does our life become. Then we find we have just to do this—to look to our Saviour, to be filled with His perfections. —J. Hudson Taylor. + + + Pray for Our Nation "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord” (Psa. 33:12). ” , To'this end e"ery Christian should pray daily. This is an acknowledg ment that God has. the power to bless our nation, and adjust labor and cap ital disagreements. God has blessed us with peace in our relationship to other powers, now we should pray and work for peace within our bor ders. “Every- good gift and every perfect gift cometh down . . . from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow1 of turning” (Jas. 1:17). —Selected. + + + A Quickening Spirit “And so it is written . . . the last Adam was made a quickening spirit” (1 Cor. 15:45). We are of the earth, earthy, by birth, but we have a new birth. That which was first was natural and earthy; afterwards comes the spiritual. How wonderful is the operation of God in creating in fallen man an eternal life! “He that hath the Son hath life.” These mortal bodies shall become, through the power o f our Lord as the quickening Spirit, glorious, immortal bodies in which He will dwell through out the eternal years. What a glori ous outlook for us whose eyes are turned Heavenward, from whence we look for Him. —T. C. Horton. ■+* + + Propitiation “And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world” (1 John 2:2).' When God of old the way of life Would teach to all His own, He placed them safe beyond the reach Of death, by blood alone. —El Nathan.

"And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins” (Matt. 1:21). Jesus! How much Thy name doth tell Of God’s rich, wondrous grace, In saving man from sin and hell, To know Thy love and peace. Oh! whosoever will may come In this, the present hour; Ere yet His saints are gathered home By His Almighty power. —L. H. S. + + + Obedience Better Than Sacrifice "Then . . . the Lord your God will deliver” (Josh. 8:7). There are many promises of deliv erance from many evils. This promise to Israel is deliverance to, not from. Ai was a little city, yet it stood in the way of progress. What is that “little city” standing in your way— that "little city” God would have you take? How did Israel receive this deliverance? By obedience to God. They went forward under the captain of God’s choosing. They did his bid ding and waited until "early morn ing” and then set forth to complete victory. So let us “ lodge the night” where God shall place us and move for ward at His command. “Then . . . the Lord our God will deliver.” Praise His Name! —lone Lowman. + + + Our High Priest "We have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God” (Heb. 4:14). The office of the high priest was to go into the presence of God for the people. His attire was signifi cant: the blue denoted the Heavenly origin; the white symbolized the pur ity of those who ministered before the Lord; the purple and the gold sig nified the exalted honor of those whom Jehovah had chosen to ap proach Him. The scarlet spoke of the blood of sacrifice which was Tie only basis for reconciliation. The breastplate which he wore had en graved on it the names of the twelve tribes of Israel, and this indicated that he bore them on his heart be fore the Lord. Christ is the perfect fulfillment of every symbol, and He, too, bears us or His heart before God. —Gospel Banner.
