is represented as the strong one; the baby is weak and helpless. She is called “the Queen of Heaven,” “Our Lady of Sorrows,” - “Our Lady of Vic tory,” “Our Lady of Peace.” These and other blasphemous titles indicate that Mary is the object of worship, the prayers, and the trust of Roman Cath olics everywhere. When her image is carried through the streets, the people bow' to the ground- and some fall prostrate before the image. Images of Mary are more common than any othei likeness. Catholics maintain that Mary had no other children ex cept Jesus, though the Scripture plain ly states that other children were born to her and Joseph following the birth of Jesus (Mark 6:3). 2. ROMAN CATHOLICS BEL I EVE THAT THE WORD OF THE CHURCH IS PRE-EMINENT. The Roman Catholic church has proclaimed the doctrine of.purgatory, which is not found in either their Bible or ours. They grant “ indul gences” which is a practice utterly without foundation in either their Bible or ours. They believe that the priest should not marry which is wholly unscriptural (1 Tim. 4:3). They teach that the priest has power to intercede with God and thus obtain forgiveness for the confessor. The Scripture plainly indicates that Christ alone is the Mediator between God and man. They declare that all mar riages not performed by a priest are illegal in God’s sight and that the children resulting from such mar riages are illegitimate. They sell pray ers for the dead under the name of masses. 3. ROMAN CATHOLICS BEL I EVE THAT THE PRIEST HAS MIRACr ©LOUS POWER. In the celebration of the mass, Cath olics claim that the priest by his Latin prayers can turn a wafer and wine into the actual physical body and blood of Jesus. When a communi cant takes communion, it is claimed that he has received the gift of eter nal life because he has "eaten Jesus.” They state that by doing certain deeds of penance the priest has power to reduce the punishment in eternity. They teach that the, pope is both spir itual and temporal sovereign and should be the ruler of this world both politically and spiritually. They do not consider the use of liquor, to bacco, and the practice of gambling sinful when they are employed to en rich the Church or its members. They sponsor many money-raising carnivals in which gambling and all kinds of worldliness are practiced.

4. ROMAN CATHOLICS TEACH THAT THERE ARE THREE PLACES OF PUNISHMENT. The tenets of Catholicism include three places of punishment: limbo, for babies; purgatory, for adults on probation; and hell, the final terminal of the hopeless sinner. Neither limbo nor purgatory are mentioned any where in our Bible or theirs. They teach that the priest has power to shorten the punishment in those places if relatives and friends of the deceased pay money to the church. They believe that the priest has power to hallow the cemetery ground where the faithful are buried, also that he can make water holy. This water is applied to the head or breast of the communicant. They teach and prac tice that it is right and proper that all those .who oppose their doctrines should be physically punished, their goods confiscated, and their faith de stroyed. One needs only to look at the countries which they rule to see that this is their program and practice. > CARLTON C. B U C K < ! Idea 1. On February 2, 1946 will be celebrated the sixty-fifth anniversary of Christian Endeavor, the first youth movement of our day. It would be appropriate to prepare and deliver a brief historic statement, showing how God has blessed this organization throughout these years of its exist ence! Idea 2. Race Relations Day, February 10, will be a splendid occasion on which to show goodwill toward any Japanese Christians who live in your community. Undoubtedly they would be happy to attend your service, if they were invited. Idea 3. In connection with the topic for February 17, it might be well to have someone point out the debt that Christians owe the Jews. Emphasize the fact that the Old Testament came to us through them. Perhaps your pastor would deliver a message on “The Jew in Prophecy.” Idea 4. The devotions at the Febru ary social could be on the great theme of God’s love, Have the members of the group quote some of the great love verses in the Bible, such as: John 3:16, I Corinthians 13, I John 4:10, 19. In keeping with the February 24 topic, why not have a missionary from one of the Latin American fields deliver a message about his work?
