EARTH'S TREASURE HEAPS By Paul R. Bauman, Th.D., D.D.

including T a c i t u s , Suetonius, and Pliny. There is also the witness of Josephus, the great Jewish historian, who was bom in 37 A. D. In his writings he refers to Jesus as “Christ the Messiah” ; he mentions His mar velous miracles and teachings; and he relates that Jesus was crucified under Pontius Pilate, and that He rose trom the dead. Every true child of God will wel come with interest any new discovery which will vindicate the truth of God’s Word. At the same time, let us not underestimate the value of the finest documents that have come down from ancient times, the records contained in the Bible itself. TOURING recent weeks, considerable interest has been manifested in the discovery of a burial urn or os suary on which archaeologists from the Hebrew University, at Jerusalem, found inscribed the words, “Master Jesus.” According to the New York Times of October 4, the urn was one of several, which, together with pot tery, lamps, and bottles, were discov ered in a burial cave by workers dig ging the foundation for a house on the road between Jerusalem and Beth lehem. The inscriptions written in Greek lettering with charcoal on soft stone have been tentatively dated about 70 A.D. or earlier. The archae ologists at the Hebrew University consider this ossuary as quite likely “the oldest record of Christianity.” Professor E. L. Sukenik is making a careful study of the inscriptions in the hope that the urns may give a first-hand testimony to the trial and death of Christ. They are believed to have been inscribed by men and women who knew Christ, and who followed Him to the cross. Several p e r s o n s have forwarded newspaper clippings, reporting this discovery, and along with one clipping came a letter in which the writer made the following observation: “Isn’t it strange that men are calling for an eyewitness account of the death of Christ? We have had the accounts of eyewitnesses to His death for cen turies. More than that, they are wit nesses whose testimonies cannot be gainsaid.” The writer of this letter is exactly right. Why do men con tinue to ask for accounts of the life, death and resurrection of Christ, when they have had before them for centuries such records, the genuine ness of which has been completely established? Let us not forget that in the Gospel according to John we have an eye witness account of the crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ. Having de scribed in lost vivid fashion His death for our sins, the Apostle John writes, “And he that saw it bare rec ord, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe” (John 19:35). In addition to the divinely inspired records of the Gospel writers, there has been for centuries the evidence gathered by several Roman historians,
