How the Worst Thing Ever Turned Into the Best Opportunity

“Everything fell into place, and what I thought had been a disaster turned out to be an important turning point in my life.”

Bending my knees was beyond painful, jumping hurt, and landing was like a torture treatment. Every time I landed, I felt a sharp knife-like pain in both my knees. I could not go on like this as an athlete, and I could not enjoy a normal, active life if I didn’t find a solution to my knee problems. Getting better consumed me. I have always loved to play sports, be active, and be outside. This was something I needed help with. I had felt the physical pain of my knees, and now the emotional pain of knowing that I could not do the thing I had wanted to do my whole life was a heavy blow. Not until I found a movement expert was I able to learn how to improve my situation. I found myself two hours south of my house in Del Mar, California, sitting in front of Pete Egoscue, the founder of the Egoscue Method. He looked at my body position, and he began to explain, after taking posture photos of me, why my knees were bothering me. Within three months of doing posture and passive and active functional movements, my pain was gone. I eventually had the ability to return to volleyball, but once I felt better, I wanted to encourage other people to move and feel better, too. I decided to intern under Pete and went on to work for him for five years. The process happened to tie into the degree I was already pursuing in kinesiology. Everything fell into place, and what I thought had been a disaster turned out to be an important turning point in my life. cover continued on p.2 ...

THIS DECEMBER WILL MARK Fitness Together’s 10th anniversary in Mooresville. As Fitness Together’s 10th anniversary in Mooresville. As we get closer to the date, I look back and feel amazed at what we’ve accomplished. Back in college, I never would have pictured myself here. To be honest, back in college, I never pictured myself doing anything except playing beach volleyball. Volleyball doesn’t get much recognition in North Carolina, but back in California, where I grew up, it’s a highly competitive sport. Along with soccer and basketball, I played volleyball all through high school. In my senior year, we were national champions, and I entered San Diego State University with plans to become a professional beach volleyball player. If you’ve ever been dedicated to a sport, you can probably relate to my horror when I began to develop chronic knee pain. I reached a point where it was so unbearable, I couldn’t even bend my legs. For an athlete, losing your ability to play feels like the worst thing that can happen to you. My dream to play professional volleyball evolved into “I just want to be healthy.” I was so committed to learning how to get healthy that I decided, if I could find a way to get myself better, I would use that knowledge to help others. At the end of the day, more important than playing professional sports was that I wanted to be able to move, play, and be active for the rest of my life. This knee pain I had was so severe that I could hardly walk down stairs.

Over the past decade, the importance of fitness has reentered the public consciousness. That’s great, but many industries have linked fitness with high-impact, high-intensity workouts. Crossfit or big group fitness bootcamps can be beneficial — if you’re in your 20s. But they fail to take into account how a person’s body changes as we age, or even how the human body varies from person to person. During my time with Pete, I worked with many different people. We helped professional athletes and stroke patients; kids and seniors in their 90s; basically anyone who wanted to feel healthier. Each person was treated as an individual, with an exercise plan that addressed their body’s goals and circumstances. When I connected with Fitness Together and opened my studio in Mooresville, I brought much of what I learned from Egoscue with me: one- on-one training, combined with a deeper understanding of biomechanics, and a focus on nutrition, posture, movement, and cardiovascular health. Nearly 10 years later, I’m proud to say we’ve never lost sight of that goal. We’ve been able to help many people, and I look forward to helping many more.

Stay tuned for my book, which is set to be released this September.

The True Value of Fitness Trackers MORE THAN A FAD

Recently, the media went from calling fitness trackers “the next big thing” to insisting they were part of a dying fad. However, fitness trackers are a booming market, with sales projected to reach $34 billion in 2020. Clearly, fitness trackers still offer some worthwhile value. Here’s what a fitness tracker can do for you. HELP YOU FORM HEALTHY HABITS A study published in the journal “Neurology” found that tracking certain health areas is a valuable tool for improving health. Individuals who use pedometers see an increase in activity, and fitness trackers are even better. When comparing pedometers to fitness trackers, researchers reported individuals who used fitness trackers were more physically active, averaging an extra 62 minutes of activity every week. MAKE YOUR WORKOUT SCIENTIFICALLY ACCURATE Maintaining your target heart rate is essential to a healthy workout. You don’t want to risk over or under training. Without a way to track your heart rate, you’re left with your own perceived exertion to determine if you’re working out like you should. Unfortunately, how you perceive your efforts is subjective and often won’t deliver the most beneficial workout. Fitness Together Referral Program! We believe in building a healthy community. At Fitness Together, each person we’re able to help brings us a step closer to that goal. This is why we’re grateful for every referral we receive. We appreciate the trust you place in us when you recommend Fitness Together to your friends and family. To show our thanks, for every referral you send our way, we’ll give you $100 off your next fitness package when they sign up! Thank you for helping us improve your health and the health of our community.

SET REALISTIC GOALS If you want to leap from a sedentary lifestyle to running a marathon in just three months, you’re either going to overwork your body and hurt yourself or fail at that goal. While there is nothing wrong with failure, setting unrealistic goals reinforces the mindset that failure is expected. Fitness trackers can help you set achievable goals based on your current fitness level and timetable. WHAT’S THE BEST FITNESS TRACKER? The market has been flooded with fitness trackers. At Fitness Together, we recommend the fitness tracker that stands above the rest: Polar A360. Unlike other fitness trackers, Polar A360 has been scientifically proven to accurately track your heart rate. It’s also waterproof, incredibly reliable, and comes with a user-friendly app that doesn’t demand you be a fitness expert to understand the data you see. Its 24/7 activity tracking capabilities record standard data like steps, calories, and sleep, while offering practical guidance for your workouts. The app even explains how certain activities benefit your health, and it records target settings so you know what intensity to aim for. All this comes together to give you a better workout experience with positive results.

Are Fitness Trackers a Waste of Time?

Bacon and Spinach Frittata Most Underrated Hikes From Coast to Coast

MOST UNDERRATED HIKES

From Coast to Coast

It’s summer, and your list of fun backpacking locations is looking slim and dull. Long days, good weather, and vacation time give you a great excuse to travel and cross some trails off your list, but you’re not sure where you should go. Here are some of the most underrated trails from coast to coast to add to — and cross off — your list! HIKE TO ALAMERE FALLS The hike to Alamere Falls on the Palomarin Trailhead near San Francisco, California, is an 8 ½-mile trail. Starting at the Palomarin Trailhead, hop on the Coast Trail and head toward the falls. The trail becomes narrow and steep when you reach the coast, but the tidal falls is only a short way down the beach. LOWER ROCK CREEK TRAIL Lower Rock Creek Trail is located in Mark Twain National Forest near Fredericktown, Mis- souri. The trail is 6 miles and features a beautiful waterfall. The trail offers a number of activity options and the tumbling creek and high bluffs make this a beautifully untouched area with rugged and remote areas for camping.

CONECUH TRAIL Alabama’s Conecuh Trail is a gentle 22-mile path that meanders through a remote section of forest near the Alabama-Florida border. The trail takes hikers past multiple ponds, creeks, and a spring. Keep your eyes peeled for woodpeckers, gopher frogs, and armadillos. LOOKING GLASS ROCK HIKE If you’ve driven down the Blue Ridge Parkway here in North Carolina, you’ve probably seen Looking Glass Rock. It’s hard to miss. It looks impos- sible to hike, but around the other side is a beautiful, 6.5-mile trail that takes you to the top. You’ll encounter sharp switchbacks, but you’ll have the company of a babbling stream and the reward of one of the most breathtaking vistas in the state. When planning your summer activities, consider adding new hikes to the itinerary. There are many underrated trails across the United States — don’t be afraid to discover them all!
