Just seeing the people cheering for me.” Black himself held up Myre’s arm in the victory call, declaring that the Hawkesbury hero had won the match fair and square. But then, Black proved treacherous with an after-the-match blow to Mathis, knocking him down before the Québec wrestler escaped to the dressing room area. Myre recovered and posed for the chee- ring crowd before leaving the ring himself and heading for the dressing area, making way for the final match of the night, a kickboxing exhibition fight between GNW’s own Devon “Hannibal” Nicholson and Eric “The Black Dragon” Chibuluzo of Toronto. Three rounds of kicks and punches later, Hannibal was declared the winner.
“Feels good,” Nicholson said during a later interview. “I think I needed another two rounds in the match to finish him off. I would like a rematch. If I had another two rounds, I could get a knockout.” On other cards that night, GNW women’s champion Lady Yasmine lost her belt to challenger Jessica Black; GNW Canadian champ The Green Phantom defended his title against Isaiah Bronson; Max Testosterone beat the Bruiser in a no-disqualification street match despite the Bruiser getting some unofficial tag-team help from his friend, Pretty Boy Davis; GNW World Television champion Nathan Banner kept his title on a technicality against Jeremy Prophet; and Harley Davidson of Sturgis, South Dakota, beat Hardcore McD of Smiths Falls, Ontario, in a non-title bout.
It looked bad for Mathis Myre at the start but the young Hawkesbury wrest- ler triumphed in the end in front of a cheering hometown crowd. Saturday night, over the February 2 weekend, snow was blowing outside of École secondaire publique Le Sommet in Hawkesbury. Inside, in the gymnasium, Mathis Myre faced Xavier Black from Lachine, Québec, in the penultimate match on the card for the evening’s GNW (Great North Wrestling) Satur- day Wrestling Spectacular, and managed to pin his opponent to the mat during the final seconds before the bell. “I’m pretty sore,” said Myre, smiling,
