LINLITHGOW STAKES First run under this name as a weight-for-age race in 1908, the Linlithgow Stakes was originally known simply as the VRC Flying Stakes and was for many years a feature of Oaks Day. Its new name honoured John Hope, the seventh Earl of Hopetoun (1860–1908) and 1st Marquis of Linlithgow. Keen on riding and polo, Hopetoun had been a popular young Governor of the colony of Victoria (1889–1895) before returning to become Australia’s first Governor-General (1901–02). His death at the age of 48 prompted the renaming of this race.
