Expectations of Board Members

EXPECTATIONS OF RSO BOARD MEMBERS

Thank you for your commitment to the Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra. We greatly appreciate the value of the time, energy, ideas, money and enthusiasm you will be providing to the RSO as a member of the board of directors. We need you to enthusiastically support the RSO through active participation in the board’s management and the direction of the RSO’s business activities, through your attendance at concerts and events, with your financial support, and through publicly advocating for the RSO whenever possible. Governance: Board members are elected (generally but not exclusively) at the RSO’s Annual Meeting in June for a three-year term (one year is July 1 to June 30). Board members may generally serve no more than two consecutive terms. We expect board members to make every effort to attend board meetings, and to advise the president or the executive director of any necessary absence. We also expect board members to participate in any committee or task force they may be asked by the president to join. As with any board, we need members to actively engage with each other and with the RSO’s staff in making sure we make timely, well-considered business, financial, and program decisions which are in the best interests of the RSO. Any board member who may benefit personally or in their business from transactions with the RSO should discuss the issue with the president of the board and refrain from participating in the approval of any such transactions.

Expectations Cont.

Event Attendance: We expect board members to purchase tickets for RSO regular season concerts, whether or not they are able to attend. To the extent possible, we encourage board members to attend other RSO concerts and events, such as chamber music performances and fundraisers. Financial Support: We expect each board member to make an annual financial contribution to the RSO (no later than December 31 of each year) of at least $1000, in addition to the purchase of season concert tickets, or to obtain a financial contribution to the RSO of at least that amount from a third-party donor. If there are circumstances affecting a board member’s ability to make such a commitment, or if a board member believes he or she can make equally valuable in-kind contributions, those should be discussed with the president of the board, who may seek advice from the executive committee. In addition, board members are expected to support the RSO’s overall fundraising efforts with their time, as well as additional contributions. Advocacy: We expect each board member be part of our leadership team. This includes enthusiastically advocating for the RSO’s mission, goals and programming in interactions with friends and neighbors, in community forums, and wherever there is an opportunity to promote the Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra.
