The King's Awards Magazine 2024

PAST WINNER INTERVIEW

Midas Pattern Company

AWARD CATEGORY: Sustainable Development SIZE OF COMPANY: SME WHERE BASED: Bedford TYPE OF BUSINESS: Engineering (Specialist precision polyurethane moulders) PROFILE: Alan Rance JOB TITLE: Managing Director

What made Midas Pattern Company apply for a King’s Award? Deputy Lieutenants Nick Keir & Sir Les Ebdon approached Midas after becoming aware of our carbon reduction journey, The Midas Green Initiative (The #MGI), and suggested we would be wise to apply for a Queen’s Award in 2022. We took up the invitation [but] unfortunately, we were not successful. Although very deflated Nick and Sir Les encouraged us to try again and we did, achieving success in 2023 by winning one of the first King’s Awards.

What research did you do about the Awards/ application process? To be honest, very little. After the briefing from the Deputy Lieutenants we just reviewed the online application form and realised that, although there was a lot of work to do, the online form was really easy and self-explanatory to complete.

Company Background

Established as a precision foundry pattern- making company in 1989, Midas Pattern Company has grown to become the largest specialist PU moulder in the world. Using its innovative Midas MRIM system - a unique kind of resin injection mould tool which enables it to make polyurethane castings - the company manufactures large, complex, highly finished medical and analytical device enclosures with ‘life saving’ or ‘life enhancing’ qualities across its three Bedford factories. As well as being Carbon Net Zero to PAS 2060 (1,2 & 3) since January 2021, Midas also mitigates all the embedded carbon within its mouldings by way of an innovative business partnership with local community woodland, the Forest of Marston Vale.

What planning did you do beforehand?

Beforehand planning was once again very simple. After we had decided which team members were suited to which tasks, I supported them in every way I could, predominantly with guidance around the heartbeat of the #MGI and overall encouragement.
