Harrison Spinks is a fifth-generation family-owned luxury bed and components manufacturer based in Yorkshire. Founded in 1840, the business now employs around 500 people and is known as an industry leader in sustainability and responsible manufacturing. The Leeds-based business is also one of the most vertically integrated bed manufacturers in the world. It is the only bedmaker to have its own farms where it produces home-grown natural materials for use within its luxury mattress fillings, and creates c.95%* of its own mattress components, including growing its own hemp fibres, and its wool-based, naturally fire-retardant chemical-free mattress fabric that’s also woven in-house. The recent King’s Award for Sustainable Development adds to its two current King’s Awards for Innovation and International Trade and previously awarded Queen’s Awards, bringing the total number achieved by the business to eight. Environmental initiatives Harrison Spinks recently released its Impact Report, outlining a host of sustainability-focused initiatives to minimise its environmental impact, enrich the local environment and enhance colleagues and communities. The plans include becoming Nature Net Positive across all operations and decreasing carbon emissions from direct operations by 95% within 10 years. The company’s components division has introduced innovative new manufacturing technology that reduces the energy consumption of its pocket spring making by 60%**, as well as decreasing raw material usage.

Harrison Spinks is one of the UK’s largest growers of hemp – a crop known for its environmental benefits. This year the business is increasing its flax acreage by 500% to 120 acres to replace cotton within its luxury mattress fillings. “A tremendous honour” Simon Spinks, Chairman of Harrison Spinks, says: “Receiving the King’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development is a tremendous honour, especially after previously holding a Queen’s Award in this category, and it reflects the unwavering dedication of our whole team’s efforts to be the UK’s most responsible bedmaker. We have now been awarded a total of eight King’s and Queen’s Awards, which is more than any other bed or component manufacturer in our field. “As a proud British manufacturer, this

month for children and families in poverty, or helping our employees achieve a better work-life balance by introducing a compressed four-day working week, we know the importance of making a positive difference to the world around us.” Investing in the future Harrison Spinks is making further sustainability commitments to benefit its business and the environment, including working towards becoming Net Zero by 2050, investing in Solar PV technology to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, which is projected to create 400,000 kWh of energy per year, and digitising the wire-drawing process within its components division to reduce CO2 by 40% through the Innovate UK funded Sustainable Smart Factory competition. The business is also boosting the local natural habitat, shifting from overseas carbon offsetting and investing into programmes in Britain, such as the Wild Ingleborough programme led by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust to help restore the natural habitat and combat climate change. * By weight, Harrison Spinks manufactures its own mattress components in-house, equating to c.95% of the total mattress by weight. ** Energy consumption of the pocket spring making process reduced from 4.17kWh vs 1.65kWh from the previous process.
