Arrowsmith Engineering (Coventry)
Doff Portland Ltd
Arrowsmith Engineering (Coventry) is flying high in export markets after it was announced as an International Trade winner in the latest King’s Award for Enterprise list. The company, which is part of the rapidly growing ASG Group, has seen overseas sales rocket by nearly 400% following the pandemic,
Doff Portland is a leading manufacturer of garden care products and the sole UK manufacturer of slug pellets. Established in 1946 in Nottingham, it is home to the brands Doff, Power Up, Green Fingers and Portland Garden. Supplying both the amateur gardening and professional agriculture sectors in the UK and Europe, the King’s Award for
International Trade especially recognises the short-term sales growth achieved over the past three years.
with orders now accounting for 35% of the firm’s annual £8.3m turnover. Precision components manufactured in Coventry are sent to customers in China, France, Germany, Singapore and Spain for end use in aerospace engines, landing gears and air frames. Plans are now in place to build on strategic partnerships with Incora, ITP, Mecachrome, Parker-Meggitt and Rolls-Royce to take annual sales past £12m over the next two years. Jason Aldridge, Managing Director of Arrowsmith Engineering, says: “We have enjoyed phenomenal export growth and this has led to us winning the International Trade King’s Award for the second time in our history. It’s a real landmark moment for us.”
Led by CEO Ben Shapiro, he attributes the company’s overseas success to its significant investment in propriety authorisations, and exclusive partnerships. Doff has extended its UK authorisations for slug control to over 15 EU countries, facilitating the export of a wider product range. Ben says: “Our team designed a high quality, rain-fast pellet, using British wheat. Our local sourcing of wheat and manufacturing methods means that our process has the lowest carbon footprint in the EU. Our innovation in this field ensures our retail customers are supplied with professional grade product, certified for organic use.”

ApconiX Ltd
ApconiX was founded by Dr Richard Knight, Professor Ruth Roberts and Dr Michael Morton, three individuals with the drive and ambition to create a world-renowned drug safety company. The journey began with the idea to provide life science companies with access to high quality drug safety expertise, normally available only in large pharmaceutical companies. ApconiX has previously won a Queen’s Award for International Trade in 2022. Richard says: “Receiving the King’s Award is a significant recognition for any UK business, and we are proud to receive our second award from the Palace in three years.” In nine years of trading, ApconiX has grown to a 100-strong team, helping clients all over the world make better decisions on drug safety. ApconiX has team members based in Sweden, North America, New Zealand and Israel. Ruth adds: “This recognition is a tremendous achievement and testament to our growing international reputation and the hard work and ambition of the whole team.” There are three key elements to the business: a consultancy group that advises clients on drug safety; a laboratory that screens new compounds for cardiac and seizure safety
effects, and a safety science team that provides expert target and modality assessments, enabled by state-of-the-art data science. Its laboratory uses the latest generation instrumentation to evaluate drug safety and carry out novel ion channel and stem cell research. Expertise in other important areas has been added, including medical devices, inhaled drugs, DMPK and biologics. Exporting is essential for ApconiX’s growth as drug research and development is a truly global endeavour and export revenue accounts for over 60% of turnover. Today, ApconiX has clients all over the globe including South America, Japan, South East Asia and Australia, as well as well as the more established bioscience markets of Europe and North America. Mike adds: “We are delighted by our sustained growth and continued success in exporting ApconiX services overseas and fully expect our export sales to be a continued strength in the coming years.”
