Barkers traces its roots back to 1861 and currently employs 185 people at its 4½ acre site in Stoke- on-Trent. The company’s unique advantage lies in having its own fabrication, galvanising and powder coating plants on-site, ensuring superior quality control and service. This integrated approach also reduces carbon emissions by eliminating the need for transport to external service providers. Specialising in an extensive array of steel fencing and gates, Barkers has established a significant global presence, with its products reaching diverse locations, from the Falkland Isles and the USA to Japan and New Zealand. Despite the global presence of fencing industries, Barkers stands out due to the added value of its specialist independently tested products and exceptional technical expertise. The team’s friendly service and comprehensive approach are key factors that attract customers worldwide. In the past year alone, Barkers’ industry- leading perimeter security products have been shipped to nearly 20 countries, showcasing their expansive reach.

The unique fencing systems are rated to stop such vehicles without requiring additional wire rope fences, barriers or bollards. Both SecureGuard RCS and StronGuard RCS offer unique market advantages, being easier to install and more cost-effective than alternative solutions. Their PAS68 rating and innovative design have set new standards in hostile vehicle mitigation (HVM). Committed to achieving Carbon Net Zero As part of Hill and Smith PLC, Barkers is committed to achieving Carbon Net Zero by 2050 and as such is continually looking at ways to reduce its carbon footprint. The company is also dedicated to workforce development by enrolling 12 new apprentices and upskilling 22 existing employees through Apprentice Levy funded programs. Receiving the King’s Award is one of the most significant and rewarding achievements in Barkers’ 160-year history. This recognition not only celebrates its past successes but also inspires future growth and innovation in the field of perimeter security. To commemorate the occasion, Barkers employees were given Friday 24 May 2024 as a ‘Barkers’ bank holiday.
