INNOVATION
JST Services Group is an Ayr-based logistics company active in the port services sector. It provides operations at ports throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland. The company is particularly active in delivering asset-based logistic solutions to the forest sector, and its innovation of Mobile Floating Piers has enabled large capacity cargo ships to berth directly adjacent to remote forests. This innovation uses short-sea coastal shipping to open new markets and create value for Scottish forest owners, whilst at the same time keeping HGV lorries off tourist roads. With a network of three Mobile Floating Piers, JST’s technology has generated the economies of scale that enables Scottish logs to move from estates in the remote Highlands to markets in the central belt, Southern Ireland and South Wales. Employing 63 people, JST Services (Scotland) Ltd was founded in 1993, developing a separate Floating Piers division in 2008. JST’s Floating Piers are part of the company’s wider drive towards enabling UK industries to move towards Net Zero. Each cargo ship loaded at one of JST’s Mobile Floating Piers removes some 200 HGV truck journeys from Scotland’s rural roads. In its wider business the company facilitates UK exporters and importers to bring their products much closer to JST Services Group
the point of consumption by using coastal cargo ships calling at small ports and wharves to avoid excessive road use. Richard Jennings, Managing Director of JST Services Group, says: “As a service business, receiving a King’s Award for Innovation is an absolute honour for the company and a huge testament to our employees, partners and customers.” JST SERVICES GROUP Highfield Business Park, St Quivox, Ayr, KA6 5HQ Tel: 01292 262050 • info@jstservicesgroup.com
One Big Circle
The One Big Circle team is incredibly proud to be honoured with the prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise for Innovation, which recognises their efforts in providing innovative solutions in the rail industry with their ground- breaking AIVR technology. “It is a momentous achievement to be awarded the accolade of King’s Award for Enterprise and is a fantastic reflection on our team who have worked so hard on delivering innovation with and for the UK rail industry,” says Emily Kent, co-founder at One Big Circle. “From our first deployment just before the pandemic to now being a trusted partner of the industry, delivering a high level of data service every day, it is a real demonstration of innovation, and a great example of what can be achieved through collaboration.” One Big Circle was founded by Emily, Ian Packer, Sam Low and Barnaby Kent in 2017 with a simple premise: to create smart video solutions to help people navigate challenging industrial environments. The Bristol-based tech company is now a team of over 50, working at the forefront of Intelligent video, machine learning and artificial intelligence
within the rail sector. With a broad range of expertise and technical skills, the team has developed the end-to-end AIVR system to meet rail challenges, developed for safe and remote monitoring of critical national infrastructure. AIVR (Automated Intelligent Video Review) is deployed across the UK railway by Network Rail, Transport for Wales and multiple operators. The innovative system captures high definition forward facing, thermal, linescanning and overhead imagery from onboard trains, and automatically transmits the data to the web-based AIVR platform. Machine learning and AI is applied to the data to automatically detect assets and conditions across
the network. Thousands of users from multiple disciplines within the industry now access the data and intelligence using the AIVR platform, and access a suite of digital tools to help them increase their remote inspection capability, ultimately keeping them safer and helping the railway run more smoothly.
