And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renew ing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God (Rom. 12:2). —o— The Down Hill Road 1. N eglect o f prayer. “Thou restrainest prayer before God.” Job 15:4. 2. Disregard o f the Bible. “I will bring evil upon this people . . . because they have not hearkened unto my words, nor to my law,: but re jected it;”. Jer. 6 :19. 3. Forsaking the Means o f Grace. “Not forsaking the assembling of yourselves together, as the manner of some is.” Heb. 10:25. 4. Levity in Conversation. “Neither filthiness, nor foolish talk ing,_ nor jesting, which are not con venient.” Eph. 5 :4. 5. Falling into Outward Sin. “His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins.” Prov. 5 :22. — o — ' While admitting the possibility, and the undesirability of being too. much oc cupied with the powers of darkness, it is •filone the less important to know hów to deal with them. To be ignorant of Satan’s, devices, and unprepared for the Devil’s wiles, is not a mark of spirituality, but of the reverse (2 Cor. 2:11; Eph. 6:11). Without presuming to be exhaustive, I may say that I have lately found seven ways of dealing with Satan, and the powers of darkness and evil, taught in the Holy Scriptures:— (1) Stand against ( oppose ) (Eph. 6:11) ; (2) W r e s t l e against (verse 12) ; (3) Withstand — Re-. iirf—same word in Greek (verse 13), but different from . .“Stand against” (1 Pet. 5 :8 ; James 4 :7 ) ; (4) R ebuke (Zech. 3: 2 ; Jude 9 ; Mk. 1 :2 5 ); , (5) Command (Acts 16:18); (6) Bind (Matt. 12:29); (7) Overcome (Rev. 12:11). ’ Satan aimed at the destruction of the Lord Jesus by death, through death he was himself destroyed (Heb. 2:14) ; he sought to overcome by blood, by blood he is overcome (Rev. 12:11); he bound a daughter of Abraham (Luke 13:16), he has been, and can be, bound (Matt. 12: 29) ; he resisted Joshua the high ■priest (Zech. 3:1) ; we can resist him, and know that he will flee (James 4:7) ; he is* the “Strong Mnn armed” (Luke 11:21), Christ the “Stronger than he” has dis armed him (verse 22; Col. 2 :1 5 ); he stood up against Israel—provoking David to number -them (1 Chron. 21:1), we stand against his wiles (Eph. 6 :1 1 ); in the Lord, and in the power of His might, we can overcorfie all the powers of dark ness, and having done all, stand (Eph. 6:13). ' — “O— Blessed is thè man who, having no thing to say, abstains from .giving wordy evidence of the fact. ~~~ o— There is no failure more heart-break ing and disastrous than success which leaves God out of the bargain. —o— “You can’t catch a cqw in a cobweb,” nor hold your heart to virtue by vows and promises made in your‘Own strength.
