Otriking Stories of God’sWorkingO O -------------GATHERED THIS MONTH FROM BIOLA WORKERS-------------O
Farewell to Robert H. Bender F OR a long time our devoted worker among the Spanish peo ple of Los Angeles and vicinity, Robert H. Bender, has had it in his heart to return to his former field in San Salvador, Central America. Only the ill health of Mrs! Bender prevented his going. A few weeks ago Mrs. Bender’s protracted sufferings came to an end and she went to be with the Master she loved. Nothing can keep Mr. Bender now from flying to the hungry- hearted peoples of Central America.' It will mean a big gap to be filled in our local Spanish work, but we could only say, knowing how definitely the call has been ringing in our brother’s heart,—“Go, and God prosper your testimony as He has in Los Angeles.” Mr. Bender leaves behind him scores of happy Mexican Christians who are bearing faithful testimonies among their countrymen here; A number ,have already returned to their native land to become missionaries. God has marvelously used this man, His ever cheerful ways, even though he was bearing heavy burdens; his Christlike life;; his passion for the souls of his people; his earnest prayers, have made an impression upon all who have been associated with him, and we know that the prayers of hundreds will follow him as he goes to Central America. ‘‘ /^ i AN you tell me where I can find the minister of this V_> church?” The young woman addressed, one of our stu dents, looked up, to find herself staring into the troubled eyes of a young man about 30 years of age. His appearance and manners proclaimed him to be one to whom opportunities .of education and refinement had been given. The young woman, who was in the church because of a children’s class that had just been dismissed, told the man that they were without a pastor at the present time. He seemed to be in such evident trouble that she asked him if perhaps she might be able to help, as there was no one else to whom to turn but the janitor. She had been in Christian work before coming to the Bible Institute, therefore felt that she might speak to him and perhaps help him. Then he said to her, “I must talk to someone; I have lost all faith in God and His Word; just today I burned my Bible because I felt I was through with it, and now I realize what a dreadful thing it was, and I am in agony.” Out of her years of experience in dealing with burdened souls, the student led this one whom God had brought to her ministry in such a marked way, back to the God whom he had denied and forsaken. He proved to be a college man who had spent thousands of dollars on his education, yet, lacking God, he was miserable until brought into right relation with Him. Who knows what will be the result of that apparently chance meeting? One Murder Less —Thanks to Biola Hall “ /CON TA C T is opportunity and opportunity is responsibil- V->f ity.” . . . A student, recognizing this, secured an inter view with a young man who paused to listen to the message from our entrance. . , . ,v Harry Smith was on his way to take the life of the man who had wrecked his home, when arrested by the voice of one crying in the wilderness, “Behold.the Lamb of God, which .taketh Burned His Bible—Then His Conscience Caught Fire
away the sin of the world.” . . . . Harry had followed the home wrecker half way across the continent, finally locating him in Los Angeles. When the obstacle to his acceptance of Christ was finally located, the struggle really began. It was hours before he would yield, fully knowing in doing so, that hate would be controlled, and his purpose frustrated. The Spirit of God, however, overcame the strong man who had held him captive at. his will, and with his new found freedom in Christ blessedly real and precious, he was now more than willing to leave the issue in the hands of Him who hath said, “Vegeance is mine, I will repay.” The change in Harry is supernatural. By profession a gam bler, with all the appearance of one who had sunk almost as low as a human could sink, now, after three months working on a ranch, sticking close to the Lord, he continues to grow in grace and knowledge of the Lord, reading, praying, testifying. ’ He has landed a good position at one of our city hospitals and is looking forward to taking up definite study at the Bible Institute. ■ >i—o— Does Nuntius Club Work Stand the Test? T HOSE who know what athletics mean to the college athlete will understand the work that God has done in the life of one of our Nuntius Club boys. Home from college in another state to recuperate finances that he may return to college later, he earnestly desired to keep “in training” for the athletic field on his return. The only way in which this desired end might be accomplished was by joining one of the amateur athletic clubs—• but their “work-out” is on Sunday mornings, and so, after a little talk with the Bible woman who had led him to Christ two years ago, he put aside his ambitions to keep in condition during his time of working, and every Sunday morning sees him going from a Christless. home to the house of the Lord. This boy was brought to Christ by a Testament presented to him, in company with seven other boys in the same Club, graduating at the same time from High School. The Testaments were given as graduating presents, and used as place cards at the banquet with which the Club closes its year of work. It was the first Scripture.portion he had ever owned, and it made a deep impression on him, eventually leading him to the feet of the Lord Jesus Christ. Away, from home, from the Club, and from Christian influences, save for the letters written him by his teacher in the Club, he is growing substantially for the Lord. —o— Nuntius Club Gets Them Young T HE Nuntius Club has started its cradle roll. The first Nuntius baby arrived on earth March 13, and has been presented with a leather covered Pocket Testament, for future reference. Baby’s dad was the first boy to be signed up by the boy founder of the Nuntius work ten years ago, he was the first boy to receive Christ after the Oub was organized, and now he is the first to start our cradle roll. May little Bobby indeed find Christ as he reads the Testament presented to him. —o— If Not Big Enough—Grow Into It A T the close of a local Bible class recently, one of our Bible L women was approached by a woman >with the statement that that day’s lesson had reversed a decision which she had just that day given to her pastor and Sunday School superintendent,
