with what was almost His dying request. “Do this,” He said, “in remembrance of me.” Let the heart of every man and every woman who professes to love Him, answer: “According to Thy gracipus Word, In meek humility, ' This will I do, my gracious Lord, I will remember Thee.”

do but admit their need. We should never stay from Christ on account of our want of faith; the more we doubt Him, the more we need to be in His presence. ji ? . We can all trust in the Lord when we walk in smooth and verdant ways, but when the track leads through the desert or up the steep and rough ascent, we are apt to say: “My way is passed over of my God.” Yet Job’s words are as true in the one case as in the other. Like the Patriarch, we may not be able to see Him; we may, for a time, search for Him in vain; we may utterly fail to trace His purposes; but God does not, even for a moment, lose sight of His children. It is true, moreover, even when the pathway is of our own choosing, f'not of His. We may wander into places where we cannot See Him, but not where we are beyond His gaze. And we may rest assured that that gaze is one of pity and of love. He not only; knows the way that we take, but in His own good timeLHe will lead us to a heaven of quietness, and rest, and peace. “When he hath tried me I shall come forth as gold.” The testing may not be agreeable but “Though painful at present,

WHAT an extraordinary position—-to believe .and yet to doubt. Yet it is a common experience, one with which most of us are more or less familiar. If we were asked concerning a certain matter, we should say unhesitatingly that we believed it, yet somehow or other we do not feel sure. Yes, there is the secret of our trouble, we do not fe e l sure. But faith-is not feel ing: the one is a mental attitude, the other is often a question of nerves. The one is spiritual, the other is physical. Christ does not demand, from us that which we are not able to do or be. He does not enquire whether our faith is weak or strong, whether it is trembling or unshakeable; He simply asks whether we belieye. “He knoweth our frame, he remembereth that we are dust.” Faith like a grain of mustard, seed finds favor in His sight. He did not reject the suppliant before us because his faith was mixed with unbelief; He honored the trust that was really there, and dispelled the anxiety by granting the man’s request. True, He says to each one of us : “O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?” but He does not send us away empty because our trust is mingled with fears. A .frank and full confession of our unbelief is the surest remedy against its presence and its power. Faith is. the gift of God, and He “giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not,” if .they
