MARCH 2020
THE LUCKIEST MOMENT OF MY LIFE T he celebration of St. Patrick’s Day this month has good luck and fortune on my mind, which led obvious how interested I was. Set on meeting her, I sought out my roommate’s assistance in getting introduced to Hillary. We began spending time together (or, more accurately, I began to woo her), and the rest, as they say, is history.
me to consider the good fortune that has brought so many wonderful people into my life. It started with my parents the day I was born. My dad was an attorney and served as an inspirational force for me. My mom raised me with patience and kindness and was another source of inspiration. Throughout my school days, I was fortunate to have incredible teachers, 4-H advisors, and professors. Looking at the major parts of my life, I can’t help but think that one of the most fortunate things that’s ever happened to me was meeting Hillary. She’s had more of a positive influence on who I’ve become as an attorney and person than anyone else in my adult life. I was in law school when we first met. I wasn’t your typical law student. In addition to school, I had a job at a law firm, and if you can believe it, I moonlighted as a bouncer at a local music hall. Well, one of the nights I was working the latter job, Hillary came to the dance hall with her friend, who happened to be dating my roommate at the time. I’m fairly certain Hillary didn’t pay any attention to me that night, but I noticed her immediately. I could tell she was someone special. I tried to play cool, though in hindsight, I’m sure it was
When you think about whom you end up spending your life with, you don’t always consider how the circumstances lined up to bring that person into your life. How fortunate was I that I met Hillary and that she’s chosen to spend her life with me? Meeting her was one of the most important moments of my life. Hillary has been continuously giving and supportive of helping me be a better lawyer and person. If I’m facing a challenging case or I’m unhappy with how a client is being treated, she’s there for me. “When you think about whom you end up spending your life with, you don’t always consider how the circumstances lined up to bring that person into your life.”
When I was at a fork in the road trying to decide between staying with the firm I worked for or taking the leap and opening my own law firm, she was there for me. If it wasn’t for her support, I don’t know if I would have found the confidence to take the leap and open Rinehardt Law. Hillary gave me the courage. It was tough when we first started out —we didn’t have a lot of clients, and it was scary thinking about the future. Still, I don’t think we ever thought that we’d made the wrong choice. We got through it because we did it together. We’ll be celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary in May, and that’s thanks to the incredibly good fortune and circumstances that came together at the dance hall that night. I’m sure glad they brought Hillary into my life.

DON’T WAIT FOR GOO
COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ROOTS Celebrating St. Paddy’s Day in Ireland vs. America From extravagant parades to green-dyed rivers, something about St. Patrick’s Day feels quintessentially American — despite its Irish heritage. That’s because many common St. Patrick’s Day traditions actually originated in America, evolving beyond their roots in the Emerald Isle in a few key ways. On March 17, Irish folks commemorate the death of St. Patrick, who brought Christianity to pagan Ireland during the late fourth and early fifth centuries. Historically, these religious origins make for a more somber observance of St. Patrick’s Day. Many Irish families go to church and eat a modest feast as the extent of their celebration. However, St. Patrick’s Day in America is not so much about venerating Ireland’s patron saint as it is about celebrating Irish heritage in a foreign land. When Catholic Irish immigrants first came to the United States, they faced persecution from a largely Protestant population. In response, Irish Americans began using March 17 as a day to publicly declare and celebrate Irish heritage with parades and demonstrations. The observation of St. Patrick’s Day grew in popularity in cities with large Irish populations, like Boston, New York, and Chicago. Then, in the booming post-War World II economy, various businesses aggressively marketed the holiday to Americans of all heritages. Thus, it became a day when anyone could celebrate Irish American heritage, or at least it gave everyone an excuse to drink like they believe the Irish do. Ironically, imbibing was not a part of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in Ireland until relatively recently. Due to the religious nature of the holiday, pubs and bars closed down on March 17 until 1961. Additionally, the traditional meal of corned beef and cabbage is another American addition. In Ireland, pork and cabbage was actually more common, but impoverished Irish immigrants substituted less expensive beef for pork, and the tradition stuck. Even though the most widely observed St. Patrick’s Day celebrations originated in America, many of them have found their way back to Ireland. Starting in 1996, the St. Patrick’s Day Festival in Dublin now attracts over 1 million attendees with all the drinks and revelry that Americans love. You’d be hard pressed to find a green beer, though. In the hallowed birthplace of Guinness and whiskey, some traditions may be better left across the pond.
As John shared on the cover, certain moments feel as if everything is falling into place and the universe is smiling at us. But other times — not so much. When you’re feeling down on your luck, it can feel like the world is stacked against you. However, some parts of your life are in your control, such as the way you respond to even the most difficult circumstances. There are strategies you can use to build your confidence and approaches to difficult situations that will bring you closer to the life you want. Here are a few tools to get you started.

MANTRAS OR POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS Empower yourself with simple words or phrases that you repeat daily to reaffirm a belief or idea. Some popular mantras to begin with are “I deserve love and kindness” and “I am love. I am purpose. I was made with divine intention.” Stand in front of the mirror and repeat your affirmation to your reflection 5–10 times. This works best when done at the same time each day, such as first thing when you wake up or before you leave for work. VISION BOARDS A vision board serves as a daily, visual reminder of your innermost dreams and goals. Your vision board will contain images and words that connect you to them. To create one, give yourself a couple hours of quiet, uninterrupted time. Visualize three core desires and dreams. Then, find a sturdy piece of paper and some publications you don’t mind cutting up and make a collage of words and images that resonate with your dreams. Put your vision board where you’ll see it daily and repeat the visualization process every time you look at it. INSPIRING BOOKS The written word can be a powerful catalyst for motivating and uplifting us. It doesn’t just have to be your typical self-help genre, either. “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho, for example, follows the journey of a protagonist as they visualize and manifest their deepest wishes. It’s an entertaining and easy-to-follow story, but it also holds many life lessons. THINGS TO HAPPEN Bring Them Into Your Life

first call, the initial interaction, and through getting the process started.” Jessica shares, “I love working with people and being able to help in a tough situation. When life throws someone a curveball, I want to make it easier.” For someone as happy to assist as Jessica, joining the Rinehardt Law team was a natural fit. Upon meeting attorneys Hillary and Melanie for the first time, Jessica says, “I felt a connection. I knew this is the place I want to be.”

Since coming on board at the firm, Jessica confirms that her initial instinct was spot on. “I’ve loved it from day one. Everyone is so great to work with.”
Outside of work, Jessica’s time is focused on her family. “I’m a mom of two boys, and that keeps me very busy,” she says with a laugh, adding, “I like to keep them busy.” She does this by engaging her sons in arts and crafts and finding ways for them all to stay active. “We love to go hiking and kayaking when it’s warm enough. I call it ‘going on adventures,’” Jessica says. A very crafty person herself, Jessica enjoys photography and getting crafty whenever she can.
Jessica’s favorite quote is Jeremiah 29:11: “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’”
She says this verse is “a good reminder that when you get thrown in the trenches, even when it doesn’t feel like it, there is good ahead. You just have to trust it.”

SHORT AND SWEET IN ARKANSAS Thanks to the clever thinking of some Irish friends meeting for a pint at a bar on one of the shortest streets in the world, Bridge Street in Hot Springs, Arkansas, the First Ever 17th Annual World’s Shortest St. Patrick’s Day Parade will travel 98 feet once again this year. Don’t assume the turnout isn’t robust just because the distance is staggeringly low. The parade lasts for hours, drawing thousands of people to watch celebrities, musicians, bands, floats, and Miss Arkansas glide by. The event also features a Blarney stone kissing contest and a parade king and queen.
