do some real thinking. Of course her dad was right. She did have lots and lots for which to be thankful. Maybe she didn’t have all that Diana had. But she had much anyway. And may be the Lord meant for her to be thankful for what she did have. She got the potatoes out of the bin, went to the sink and started to peel them. Chuck watched her, “ I thought we’d have mashed potatoes and gravy.” “ Chuck, I’m ashamed of you. We’ll I have mashed potatoes some time when Mom is well but today we got some thing else to be thankful for.” “What? We haven’t even got cran berries.” “ Cranberries are good but we’re going to have nuts. Dad is cracking them, and we’ll have a grand Thanks giving.” With determination, Becky Lou asked her mom where the best table cloth was and put it on the table. She sorted out the best of the sil verware and set the table with the plates that were not chipped. And her dad chopped apples and made what he called Waldorf salad, even if it didn’t have celery in it. Becky Lou was humming with happiness when there was a knock on the back door. She opened it and there was Diana in her red coat with her white muf fler around her head. She had a blue bowl in her hands and said, “Mom thought maybe you’d like to try some of the cranberry relish. As long as you said your mom didn’t know how to make it, she sent some over.” “Thank you,” Becky Lou said, tak ing the bowl, her heart alight with joy. “ Good-bye,” Diana said and hur ried around the house, down the road. Becky Lou closed the door and called excitedly, “ Dad, look what we have.” “ Cranberries?” Chuck asked ea gerly. “ Cranberry relish, special.” She smiled, “The Lord is good, isn’t He?” “Yes, dear.” He put his arm around her shoulders and squeezed. “ And that reminds me of the rest of that verse about rejoicing in the Lord. It says, after you rejoice, then the Lord ‘will make me to walk upon high places,’ and this is a high spot for us.” “ Let’s tell Mom,” Becky Lou said, starting toward the bedroom, want ing to share the extra nice thing the Lord had done for them. “ And we’ve each other.” Becky Lou snuggled close to her dad. She did love him, He felt so big and warm when he put his arm around her. “ And we’ve got to be thankful for Mom. She’s not well, but we still have her.” Becky Lou nodded. There was no one like Mom. When Becky Lou was well, she gave her the best cookies and when she was sick she held her hand tight. “ And we’ve the Lord.” Becky Lou fumbled, “But thafs it. I asked the Lord for a special Thanks giving and He didn’t answer.” Her dad took his arm away and sat down and looked into her eyes. “ I guess this is hard to explain to little girls. Of course, God gives us every thing we have, but the real special things we have from God are the things of the spirit. Like His sending His Son down from heaven to die on the cross for our sins. You re member, honey, when you received the Lord as Saviour?” Becky Lou remembered. She had knelt by Mom’s bed and asked Jesus to come into her heart and take away'' her sins. “He has helped you ever since then, hasn’t He? And He will help you to be happy this Thanksgiving if you love Him better than cran berries. There is a verse in the Bible that goes like this, ‘although the fig tree shall not blossom . . . Ye t will I rejoice in the Lord’ (Hab. 3:17,18). That means, though I have nothing, I have the Lord, and am thankful for Him.” Becky Lou swallowed hard and went back into the kitchen. She lift ed the lid on the meat, took a large spoon and took off the scum that had come to the top. Then she began to
