King's Business - 1954-11

BOOK REVIEWS continued God, the Son of Man and the Saviour. Full subject and Scripture indexes add to the value of this new edition. 311 pages; cloth; Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co., Grand Rapids, Mich.; $4.00. Train Vp a Child By E. W. Crobb This very valuable little book may not appeal to many American par ents and educators because of its dis tinctively British approach. On the other hand, it would be profitable for such to read the wise discussions within its covers. The author is a well-known headmaster of an English private school and reveals on almost every page his devotion to the Lord Jesus Christ and a deep respect and love for the pure Word of God. If the study of this book would help our American children to acquire some of the quiet poise of their British cousins, it ought to be earnestly read by us all. 160 pages; cloth; The Pa ternoster Press, London; 6 shillings. The 12 chapters of this book are aimed at helping the reader to un derstand that time and death are not to be conceived by the child of God as the cartoonist’s “ Father Time” with the scythe and the “ Grim Reap er.” The author shows from Scrip ture and Christian experience that “ Christ who is our life” gives vic tory over the passage of time and death itself. “ All along Death knows that in the end, even though he shall have overcome the flesh, he will have lost the game, for the dying of the human body is merely the opening of the door through which a released spirit escapes temporal bondage.” Many excellent illustrations from everyday life will be found in these pages. Here is a splendid gift for the aging and infirm. 188 pages; cloth; Moody Press, Chicago, 111.; $2.50. Devotions fo r the Children’ s Hour By Kenneth N. Taylor The author states that “ this is not a Bible storybook. It is a book of doctrine for children — a book that tells what the Bible says about sin, heaven, the Lord Jesus and many other major Bible themes.” The age group for which it is best suited is from seven to 12 years. Some of the challenging topics are “ If We Cannot See God, How Can We Know He Is Alive?,” “ If I Try to Be Good W ill Jesus Save Me?,” “Where Was Jesus Death Coses the Game By John D. Freeman

“ For spiritual insight and reverent treatment of the theme of the life of our Lord, the work by Andrews has seldom been excelled. It is thorough and spiritual, and has rightly been a standard in this field for many, years.” — D r . C harles L . F einberg “ It is a real thrill to learn that the monumental and exhaustive work of Samuel J. Andrews on The L ife of Our Lord is to be republished. For the last half of the 19th century this classic was . . . the book of the century. The scholarly work has lost none of its value after the passing of half a cen tury and it should be in the library of every minister and Christian worker who wants the benefits of thorough scholarship.” — D r .
