Boreham The Australian preacher has eyes the like of which few others possess. He sees truth in the commonest af fairs of life, and his powers of de scription are amazing. These Christ mas meditations and messages will bless the reader’s heart and draw him closer to the Babe of Bethlehem — the “ one Mediator—just One!” 79 pages; cloth; Zondervan Publishing House, Grand Rapids, Mich.; $1.50. The Professor of Old Testament at Dallas Theological Seminary has done a real service for Biblical interpreta tion in this exhaustive study of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. The ground is cleared in the first chapter by a discussion of the causes of con fusion in many quarters as to this important phase of the Spirit’s work. Many Greek scholars would not agree with the author’s statement that “ Bib lical, historical and philological evi dence abounds . . . that John the Baptist ceremonially purified [bap tized] by sprinkling or pouring, that Jesus was so baptized [consecrated] . . . and that Jewish and Christian baptisms knew no other mode.” The prophecies of the Spirit’s bap tism in the Gospels are fully dealt with, after which the full significance of the baptism on the Day of Pente cost is considered. The references to the subject in the epistles come in for full treatment, and the book closes with a study of the relation between the baptism of the Holy Spirit and power in the believer’s life. A ll true believers are seen to have been bap tized by the Spirit at the time of regeneration, thus having been made members of the Church which is the Body of Christ. This work is a splendid antidote to the misinterpretations of modem Pen- tecostalists and the indifferentism of much of conservative Protestantism on this important subject. 147 pages; cloth; Van Kampen Press, Wheaton, 111.; $2.00.
