HEART OF THE LESSON There never was a greater moment in all of history than that blessed moment when the infinite One became an infant, when the Creator became a creature. Jesus Christ the Son of God became the Son of Man in order that He might make it possible for all who believe to become the sons of God. No wonder the angels hymned the glorious story of the Saviour’s birth. Let us study today the account of this wondrous event in the light of Luke 2. STUDY QUESTIONS 1. W h y did Joseph and M ary make the long tedious journey to Bethlehem? (Luke 2:1.) 2. W h y was Bethlehem called “ the city of David” ? (cp. Ruth 1:19; 4:9-11,14.) Was it not providential, then, that the heir to David’s throne should be born in the same city as was the illustrious David? 3. W h y is Luke so careful to indicate the lineage of Joseph? (v. 4.) 4. How did it happen that our Lord was born in a manger? (v. 7.) 5. What typical truth is taught by this fact— that our Lord was born in a man ger? Do you think that this fact of His low ly birthplace identifies H im more fully with the common man? Read He brews 2:5-18. 6 . Is there any typical significance to the fact that there was no room for our Lord in the inn? Of course we know that this was probably not an intentional slight, because there were thousands of pilgrims in Bethlehem at that time.
