Policy News Journal - 2015-16

Before you get started you will be taken to GOV.UK Verify to confirm your identity. You will need the following with you when using the service:

 a valid UK Passport;  UK photo card driving licence;  access to your financial information (this is needed for the fact based questions which only you should be able to answer.), i.e. ability to log into your online banking, or have your last 2 months’ bank statements. You might be asked for other details such as credit card/store card providers, amounts paid off a statement, questions about your mortgage, who are your utility providers, who is your mobile phone contract with.

You will also need a mobile phone so that you can complete a 2-step verification process (the identity provider will send a one-time code text message to your phone).

HMRC is really hoping you will try the service, take a good look at it and check your taxable income. If you think that the details HMRC holds for you are incorrect you can change them within this service.

Please ensure any changes you make are correct and complete as, while this is a trial service, any changes you make will affect your tax record.

If you're uncertain about anything please use the 'Get help with this' which you will find at the bottom of the page.

Please remember that this is a trial service so please don’t take to your Twitter accounts and publicise it just yet, HMRC want to move forward steadily. When you sign out there is a feedback survey so please complete it. This trial service is available until 6 July. HMRC will then use your feedback to improve the service before it is released more widely.

Further opportunity to help HMRC test its upcoming digital services 19 June 2015

We recently published a request from HMRC for volunteers to test its new Income Tax Estimate Service. HMRC is very grateful to those who have assisted and whilst that is still ongoing has now asked for volunteers to test other services that are being developed. There are many other services being built and Andy Jones from HMRC wonders whether any businesses or employers would like to be a bit more involved. Andy says: “Our research has shown that 60% of employees with tax issues go to their employer first”. He believes those levels can be reduced if the employee is able to ‘self- serve’ once the new services go live, so both employer and employee benefit. For services to become great services they need to be tested as they're developed. The team at HMRC would love to hear from any business that would allow them to come along to your premises and test services as they are being built. All it would take is interviews with about 6 people, each lasting around 30 minutes.

Andy commented further, “The feedback would be used to improve and shape the service that eventually goes live. That will make an enormous difference to the end product.”

So if this is something you would be interested in helping HMRC with, please contact Andy directly at: andy.s.jones@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk . Thank you.

Additional services testing GOV.UK Verify 18 June 2015

GOV.UK Verify is more secure than usual methods of proving who you are, because there’s no central storage of information.

GOV.UK Verify is the new way for you to prove who you are online, so you can use services on GOV.UK safely, like viewing your driving licence or assessing your tax. It is being built by Government Digital Service (GDS), working with government departments, private sector and privacy consumer groups.

GOV.UK Verify is being tested in public beta with users and these departments and services:
