Once they’ve registered, employees testing the service will be able to update their information and use the ‘Check your Income Tax estimate’ service. They will be able to check their sources of income subject to PAYE, their personal allowances, their tax code, and an estimate of the tax they will pay. If they see that details are incorrect, they’ll be able to change them online. This part of the service will eventually replace the P2 notice of coding sent to PAYE customers. HMRC will be adding more services to the Personal Tax Account and aim to make it available to more customers between now and the end of the year. By early 2016 HMRC expect 10 million customers to have access to their own account. By 2020, everybody in the UK will have one. They will be able to register, file, pay and update their information, at any time of the year, using the digital device of their choice.

HMRC third party tax software and API strategy 3 September 2015

HMRC plan to work more closely with tax software developers to enable them to bring new and more sophisticated products to the market. One of the key ways they will do this is by releasing application programming interfaces (APIs) with richer capabilities

“The API strategy recognises that it is important to work collaboratively with developers of tax software to help deliver high quality digital services for businesses and agents up and down the country “

These are the words of the Financial Secretary to the Treasury, David Gauke on a recent visit to a new digital delivery centre in Telford.

HMRC recognises that many of its customers, particularly businesses and agents, choose to use commercially available tax software. The recently published HMRC third party tax software and application programming interface (API) strategy shows how HMRC plans to work more closely with software developers by releasing improved APIs.

This new approach will:

allow developers to do much more

 benefit customers by helping them to get their tax tasks right first time  enable HMRC to continue to improve compliance.

This will mean more tax software products to choose from; ones that increasingly help employers and agents to get it right first time and make the administration of tax easier.
