Automatic enrolment for the business adviser - TPR considers fruit pickers 1 July 2015
The June issue of the Pensions Regulator news by email, which aims to shine a monthly spotlight on automatic enrolment issues, highlights some of the challenges facing employers with seasonal employees and considers whether postponement offers the solution or presents a risk of confusion.
News by email for business advisers is sent to over 15,000 business advisers, and includes news stories and updates on TPR tools and resources.
The June edition also includes details of a webinar What’s my role as a business adviser? This free, comprehensive webinar will begin at 2 pm on 14 July and is open to accountants, bookkeepers, payroll professionals and other business advisers.
TPR will be covering popular areas of concern which include:
Assessing and enrolling staff - who has duties and who is exempt? The adviser’s role in helping their client choose a pension scheme
The webinar will be followed by a live Q&A session with TPR experts. Registration for the webinar is via the TPR website.
In the meantime, TPR’s news by email for employers highlights that 22 percent of employers surveyed by TPR who are due to stage between June and November this year haven’t yet drawn up a plan to get ready for their new automatic enrolment duties. Domestic employers (care users) of carers who directly employ one or more people to provide them with care or personal assistance need to be aware that automatic enrolment duties will apply to them also. If the carer is provided by an agency or the local authority they will be considered to be an employer for the purposes of automatic enrolment and duties won't apply to the care user.
Helen Dean appointed as new chief executive of NEST 6 July 2015
A recent announcement from NEST has confirmed that Helen Dean, currently NEST’s executive director, product and marketing, has been appointed as NEST’s new chief executive. She will take on the role in the autumn.
Otto Thoresen, NEST Chair, commented:
‘It’s fantastic news that we have been able to appoint somebody with Helen’s background and experience, and her knowledge of NEST, to take over. The next few years are going to be critical ones in terms of ensuring auto enrolment goes smoothly for small and micro businesses. Helen’s frontline experience of the challenges we face will be invaluable in helping NEST to navigate that journey.
Baroness Altmann CBE, Minister of State for Pensions commented:
‘I would like to warmly welcome Helen Dean as the new Chief Executive Officer of NEST Corporation. Helen has played a pivotal role in shaping, developing and implementing the NEST pension scheme established to support the automatic enrolment programme. ‘Automatic enrolment is designed to affect all UK employers and workers, resulting in up to nine million people newly saving towards their retirement. Over the next two years, NEST’s focus will be on the hundreds of thousands of small and micro employers that will begin to enrol their workers into pension schemes, many of whom will choose NEST.’
