Italy has a long and storied history of making the finest leather in the world. Tanneries, old and new, good and bad abound. As with any crowded industry, there is a hierarchy among tanneries based on a combination of longevity, specificity and talent. Having spent more than eight decades in the leather industry, we have developed a keen eye for separating “good” from “better” and “better” from “best.”

In a modern marketplace that values sameness and speed, tanners willing to work with time and material intensive vegetable tanning are rare. To find a tannery working almost exclusively using this method is rarer still. The small tannery in Tuscany that produces Modern Saddle is in a league of its own in terms of prestige, generational experience, patience and skill.

Modern Saddle celebrates an ancient preservation process known as vegetable tanning. Each hide is tanned for upwards of 60 days in a potent liquor of tannin-rich vegetable matter. The two- month soak deepens the color and accentuates texture creating depth to the hue and suppleness to the finished leather. While many great strides have been made in modern tanning, there is no substitute for the look and feel of leather tanned in such a simple, organic way.

Only shoulders are used in vegetable tanning. This section of the hide is tremendously valuable in that it is the most durable and has the most consistent grain. Tanning such a small percentage of the hide increases the rarity and desirability of the finished product.

We typically cut two whole weekend bags from one standard hide. We need upwards of three whole vegetable tanned hides to craft one complete weekend bag. Hides must be hand selected and grouped to produce consistent color and grain within each bag. The number inside your bag reflects this pre-production coordination and bundling.

Without the addition of chemicals to set the dyes, the tanning process never truly ends. You will notice as you use your bag that the leather begins to patina, gradually darkening as it’s exposed to the sun, the natural oils on your hands, and the bumps and scrapes of everyday use. This is a process we want you to be aware of and revel in: the bag growing more beautiful with use and age and becoming even more unique to you. Over the course of its life, you can expect Modern Saddle to evolve from its initial golden color, burnishing into a rich shade of dark caramel.

Your Modern Saddle item only requires minimal care. The aging process will showcase the leather ’s natural beauty. Light dirt or scuffs can be cleaned with a soft dry brush or towel. Our natural leather cleaner can be used on heavier spills or stains. We suggest testing out any cleaning solution on a small section of the bag before applying it more broadly. The leather ’s natural burnishing and darkening will gradually envelop accidental discolorations.
