NATURE-BASED SOLUTIONS

Where Nature Thrives, So Do We

By converting several acres of land at our Virginia headquarters into a certified Conservation & Wildlife Habitat, we are supporting our declining pollinator population and increasing biodiversity. The deep root systems of native plants enrich the soil and reduce erosion and runoff, creating a positive impact on the local watershed, while also sequestering carbon. Through this initiative, we are transitioning from Sustainable to Regenerative, by working in harmony with nature. In 2024 our native meadow became a Certified Conservation & Wildlife Habitat.

INTERNAL INITIATIVES Waste Not

We reached a milestone in 2024 by diverting 106.52 tons of waste through our onsite waste reduction initiative, a program developed to recycle, repurpose or reuse our packaging and facility waste.

In late 2021 we conducted an internal waste audit to discover what we were sending to the landfill. Additionally, we reviewed our existing recycling efforts and their level of success. We discovered that the majority of our waste was due to supplier’s packaging that we receive with our shipments. While the packaging is necessary to protect the quality of our product, we set out to find solutions for each type of waste to bypass the landfill. Our program took off in 2022 with great success. We continue our work to educate and encourage our team to reduce, reuse and recycle all types of waste both at the office and at home.

A look at main categories diverted through our Waste Reduction Initiative as of December 2024:

PRINCIPLES IN PRACTICE

Leather’s Role in a Circular Economy

Leather plays a significant role in the circular economy and is part of a solution to our global waste crisis. Hides are destined for the landfill as waste created by a separate industry. Over 350 million hides per year are created by the meat industry. The leather industry diverts approximately 55% of these hides… the rest end up in the landfill.

Building on its responsible role, leather has a uniquely long lifecycle; it can be repaired and repurposed or recycled at the end of its use, putting circularity at its core.

HEALTHY MATERIALS Carbon Neutral Leather

When you choose Moore & Giles carbon neutral leather you are helping to offset the cradle to gate embodied carbon impact through third-party verified carbon offsets.

Through these offsets, under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), we supported a crucial project protecting some of our most vulnerable resources and endangered species in the forests of Brazil. Please review our EPDs, (Environmental Product Declarations), for more detail around the measure for Mont Blanc and Tribeca. For more information about our offsets, please refer to our 2024 Annual Carbon Neutral Verification Certificate, or contact Beverly@mooreandgiles.com.

COMMITTED TO REDUCING OUR C A R B ON FOO TP RINT

2024 was a new first for us as we launched our first two Carbon Neutral Leather options, Mont Blanc and Tribeca, two of our most popular choices. We worked with third party industry experts to measure through an LCA, the embodied carbon impact from Cradle to Gate for these leathers, took measures to reduce those impacts through renewable energy installations, and offset the remaining balance.

Leather Circularity

Leather is durable and highly functional with a longer life cycle compared to other materials, with the ability to be repaired, reused, redesigned, and recycled into new products.

Through a related program, we developed a product to recycle and sustainably redesign our onsite leather sample waste into a new sheet good we call Habitat, proving that scrap doesn’t have to end up in the landfill. The innovative process is free of the typical PVC or polyurethane typically found in recycled leather products. Habitat is manufactured domestically using Moore & Giles scrap leather combined with a water-based blend of FDA approved and plant-derived ingredients. This mixture is pressed and dried into sheets, producing a final product suitable for leather accessories and upholstery.

This program is still a work in progress, as we continue to explore the possibilities of this process as a solution to post industrial (cutting room) waste and more.

SPOTLIGHT ON The Seven Hills Collection

ADVANCING CIRCULARITY THROUGH LOCAL COLLABORATION

The Seven Hills Collection exemplifies Moore & Giles’ commitment to circular design by transforming local waste into lasting value.

According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), 40–45% of global byproduct hides from the meat industry are discarded each year. ReFED estimates that the approximate 134 million hides wasted annually contribute over 40 million tons of CO ₂ e emissions. When Moore & Giles learned that Seven Hills Food Company, a local meat processor, was sending hides to the landfill, we saw an opportunity to create a solution to our global waste crisis from our own backyard and took action. Partnering with Horween Leather Company in Chicago and Hermann Oak Leather in St. Louis — one of the nation’s oldest vegetable tanneries — we became a bridge between the source and the solution. We established a supply chain that diverts these hides from waste streams and brings new life into them through traditional vegetable tanning methods, repurposing them into lasting leather heirlooms through our Seven Hills line.

As of Dec. 2024, we diverted approximately 1,795 hides from Seven Hills Meat Co. By diverting this waste through this program, we saved 582.35 metric tons of CO2e from being released into the local atmosphere. Explore the Seven Hills Collection and more about the story here.

Reclaimed Collection: Celebrating Resource Stewardship and Circular Design The Reclaimed Collection embodies Moore & Giles’ commitment to reducing waste and valuing natural resources. Sourced from Italian and New Zealand hides, the collection reclaims leather that would otherwise be rejected by conventional industry standards due to scars or color variations. By repurposing these high- quality materials, we not only divert usable hides from the waste stream but also honor the authenticity and integrity of natural leather. Each piece reflects our belief that sustainability begins with responsible material use, transforming what others overlook into timeless, purposeful design.

Wild Idea Buffalo Collaboration: Supporting Regenerative Ecosystems

Moore & Giles’ collaboration with Wild Idea Buffalo Company exemplifies our commitment to regenerative sourcing and responsible material use. Hides are sourced from regenerative ranching operations that restore the rapidly declining prairie ecosystems of the Great Plains, capturing the full-circle benefits of a system designed to renew the land. Responsibly tanned in the US, this leather transforms what might otherwise be discarded into something meaningful. By supporting this collaboration, we advance both environmental restoration and purpose-driven design, demonstrating how materials can contribute to healthier ecosystems while creating timeless, sustainable leather.
